Turn off your anti-virus and anti-spyware programs and uninstall KB942615.
Then reinstall it and then turn them back on.

The anti-virus and anti-spyware programs have nothing to do with the problem.
It is a defect at Microsoft.

Some anti-virus programs will definitely break the installation of some
updates.

I am having problems with this also on IE 7, except it just says it cannot
open webpage. I thankfully have Firefox as a great backup so not really too
much of a pain.
Does anyone know if MS is planning on an update to fix like next Tuesday?

If MS do find solution/fix it would be a good idea to keep an eye on the
correct group, that is windowsupdate

news://msnews.microsoft.com/microsoft.public.windowsupdate

and/or somebody may come up with a fix before MS find one, so
look/search/find for the KB number in the update groups and see if there is
a solution - it has certainly popped up quite a few times as troublesome.

A fix may never get a mention in here, the IE6 group

or as you have IE7 it could get a mention here in the correct IE7 group

news://msnews.microsoft.com/microsoft.public.internetexplorer.general

However, when it comes to getting an update to download and install, there
are so many ways of doing it, not all work for all. Often it is a case of
trial and error.
What Frank S has said is often very true - often it is the simple solution.
It has worked for me for some time now and I always download first and save
to disc all that are on offer from the relevant MS page, having taken the
list on offer via the yellow shield and not from the WU Home page.
I then disconnect from the net, disable ALL AV/Antisp/Firewall etc - open
each update and install one at a time, in the order they appeared from the
yellow shield, with a reboot after each one.
I always reboot whether or not the offer is there - a few months ago MS
forgot to include a reboot after an update and it caused a problem.
After install check in Add/Remove to see if they are there.
Don't forget to enable all your security progs before connection to the net.
But do read through the posts concerning KB942615 - if the above does not
work then another solution might.
When it comes to updates these days, it seems that there is 'ore than one
way to skin a cat' as they say :-)

Good luck

Thanks for the info!! I have a bad habit of relying on the ol' standbys and
don't think to check for a more appropriate newsgroup for my question. I
will go check it now.

Hi Antioch,

Thanks for pointing out that we should look in the Windows Update group. I
was unaware of that board before you pointed it out.

(Many users have complained about this problem in there.)

I hope Microsoft issues a FIX for the problems soon.

Best wishes,

gayboylaca

X-post to Windows Update newsgroup.

The current fix is to apply the Registry edit found here:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/942367

cf.
http://groups.google.com/group/microsoft.public.windowsupdate/msg/0f171f826a1bb17a

It's important to note the not all IE6/WinXP users are having this problem.
I suspect that many of them are having issues due to real-time protection
provided by security applications (i.e., anti-virus; anti-spyware) that are
causing 942651 not to install properly.

In your case, Louis (gayboylaca), cast your evil gaze upon Norton AntiVirus.

So do you advise downloading from the Internet when the
firewall and anti-virus software is disabled?

Would you perchance cast an evil gaze upon McAfee also?

Possibly, if Louis' had had a McAfee application installed, but judging from
his recent threads in certain forums, he's using NAV.

I just tried that, and IE6 still crashes. (I'm using Zone Alarm
firewall and anti-virus/malware.) I don't think the security
software has anything to do with the bad patch.

In your message you recommend:
The Registry edit in this KB article has resolved the problem for most IE6
users: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/942367

When I read this webpage, it says:

SYMPTOMS

On a Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2)-based computer, Internet Explorer 6 may
stop responding when you try to visit a Web site.

This issue may occur after you install certain cumulative security updates
for Internet Explorer. These security updates include security update 928090
(security bulletin MS07-016), security update 931768 (security bulletin
MS07-027), and security update 933566 (security bulletin MS07-033).

___________________________________________________________________

I do not see it specifically mentioning KB942615. If it is appropriate for
KB942615 will it include that security update as well?

Furthermore it says:

RESOLUTION

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is
intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply
this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This
hotfix might receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely
affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next Windows XP
service pack that contains this hotfix.

____________________________________________________________________

WHAT I HAVE DONE:

As recommended by the Microsoft technical support telephone representative
in the Philippines, I have removed update KB942615 from my computer and it is
working ok.

Also it says:

Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend
that you wait for the next Windows XP service pack that contains this hotfix.

So I am waiting for Microsoft to issue a resolution rather than modifying my
registry by myself which I have never done before.

Thanks for the recommendation though.

I had the same question.

[......]
As recommended by the Microsoft technical support
telephone representative in the Philippines, I have removed
update KB942615 from my computer and it is working ok.

Same here. I even uninstalled the patch, restarted, downloaded
the patch from Microsoft, disconnected from the Internet, disabled
Zone Alarm firewall and anti-virus, installed the patch, and restarted
the PC and Zone Alarm firewall and anti-virus, and reconnected to
the Internet. IE v.6 still crashed when connecting to mail.Yahoo.com.
So I uninstalled the patch again, and all is well.

Also it says:

Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we
recommend that you wait for the next Windows XP service pack
that contains this hotfix.

So I am waiting for Microsoft to issue a resolution rather than
modifying my registry by myself which I have never done before.

I intend to do the same. The patch is simply bad, and if it can't
make a simple registry modification to solve the problem, I don't
think I should try, either. In the future, I'll just be more suspicious
of new "updates" from Microsoft.

Crossposted to WU newsgroup.

Please note that not all of those running IE6 and who have install 942615
have encountered this problem. (Users don't post to these newsgroups
saying, "I installed it and haven't had any issues.")

942367 *should* be updated to mention 942615 (MS07-069). I've asked MS to
take care of this. (I won't be holding my breath, though.)

I have also been in touch with MS Security Response Center (MSRC) about that
tech's misinformed advice. 942615 is a critical security update that
addresses several vulnerabilities (see the section Vulnerability Information
in http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/Bulletin/MS07-069.mspx). A
machine is at risk if 942615 is not installed!

Also note that a MS representative posted in Windows Update newsgroup and
recommended 942367 as a fix. He did *not* recommend leaving 942615
uninstalled.

Request: You've posted in numerous threads in at least two (2) MS
newsgroups. It would be best if you stuck to replying to one (1) thread and
crossposting all replies to WU and IE General newsgroups. Thank you.

PS: Disable Norton AntiVirus before installing *any* updates and you
shouldn't have any issues whatsoever. Better yet, uninstall NAV and replace
it.

Can you explain why you recommend uninstalling Nortan Anti Virus and
recommend replacing it?

Thanks,

He personally doesn't like it.
