Adam,

Are you talking about changing the "open" verb action right? Or, were you able to change the action of the "edit" verb for a file type?

Nope, not talking about the Registry. You still can change file
associations like you used to in Windows XP, but no longer from
Explorer. I'be been trying to remember how I did it for hours and just
can't. I know I got to Control Panel (I think) and there it was, but
it isn't one of the normal icons, doesn't show in Classic View either
I just can't remember how I did it or how Windows took me there if I
got there from Help, but I did, because somebody asked, I tried and it
worked. In fact it is very similar to the list of file types you used
to see in XP and you still can associate file types to whatever
application you want like before. If only I could remember...

Maybe I'll remember tomorrow. I've spent a lot of time here today
because at the same time I was burning a big stack of DVD's and had to
stay close to keep feeding them. Got about 85 done. So I guess Easy
Creator 9 works in Vista at least the copy DVD function anyway. Only
burped once and that was due to finger prints on the disc. <grin>

I need a rest... I burned about 380 GB worth of DVD's today.

Adam,

Are we talking about the same exact thing? I'm referring to changing
file associations for ANY file type.

1. right click on a file, say a .jpg
2. select open with
3. choose default program
4. select from choices shown or browse to pick some other application
5. be SURE that 'always use the selected program to open this kind of
file' is checked.

This changes file associations like it use to in XP from Windows
Explorer. I know I saw the whole list of file types somewhere too in
Vista, but still can't remember how I got there.

Well to answer my own question and my problem. There are TWO Windows Photo
Gallery links in the association area. One opens the gallery and the other
one opens a Image and Fax Viewer style image window. The icons look
identical.

The question itself is about changing the default image editor (not the "open" action).

The editor opens when you right-click an image file and choose "Edit"
The viewer opens when you right-click an image file and choose "Open"

That's the difference. Right from the beginning, I'm taking about the "Edit" action.

I'm wondering, do MVP's get special training to be deliberately
condescending or is it just you and 90% of the others MVP's that
routinely post here?

Let me further your education, Mr. MVP.

Somebody asked how to change which application opens a file type. At
one point you cackled something about changing a Registry line. Since
neither you or I or anybody else have any idea how many people are
comfortable opening their bloated Registry file let alone changing
something at the risk of making just a tiny mistake and crashing their
entire system, I took the easier path and told them how using the GUI
interface, which your benefactor Microsoft suggests is the preferred
method to making system changes whenever possible.

Now you have some need to pretend I didn't understand to further
inflate your ego. How precious, and oh how typical of MVP's.

It is a further observation of mine aside from MVP's being typically
arrogant, condescending and insisting on top posting probably just to
annoy people, most also lack basic skill in good written
communications.

Even though I know exactly what you're trying to say, I had to read it
twice just to be sure. Which probably confirms a theory I have. The
main pupose of MVP's posting to groups like these is to provide comic
relief to the rest of us. Thanks so much!

I'm not arrogant and did not offend anyone. I was trying to explain the different between "editor" and "viewer". I know the user can change the file associations via the GUI, but not the image editor as the File Types tab is removed in Vista. When did I treat you with condescension?

How can I change the default image editor in vista??
The registry key used to change it in XP doesnt change it in vista.

It's unfortunate Microsoft chose to make what was so simple in XP, more
complex. I guess I'll just change the default program that opens a .jpg to
Photoshop as I edit them more often than I view them. It just takes so much
longer to open CS2 than the Windows Photo Gallery...

Adam,

I read through this thread completely and really got tired of your
explanations since you really don't understand. For example I routinely open
picture files in ACDSee for their browsing and manipulation capabilites . . .
they're just easy. Then when I want to edit, I simply click on edit and it
opens in Photoshop or Fireworks where I do some serious things.

Edit and Open are very different and you could define both easily in XP, but
NOT in Vista.

Listen to Ramesh. He knows what he is talking about and you do not.

I understand only all too well. That's the problem.

Excuse my French, but few people posting here know shit about
anything. You're certainly an example of that.

Correction: I meant to say few MVP's know shit about anything.
