I *do* have a DVD burner - have used it to back up my hard drive, and
to copy one DVD box set - Lord of the Rings - it cost me a lot of
money and I wanted a backup as the kids sticky fingers tend to ruin
discs. - I know this is illegal - but I feel it is morally OK - you
may disagree.
(This won't appear until the thread is dead, probably - I'm on hols
ATM - but, hey, so what...)
Well, who says it's illegal? AFAIK it IS legal. And certainly easily
morally justifiable.
While I haven't yet felt the need to back up a DVD, I've certainly
made copies of my DVDs that I can play on my 'non-optical drive
equipped laptop, and I've made copies of most of my music so I can
play it on my laptop, portable CD etc. All 'fair use' of what I own.
Sue me, someone.
Most software specifically states you can make one copy for backup
purposes. Actually, this is an unfair term in the contract (thereby
rendering the contract invalid - BWHAHAHA!!!). Good backup practice
is to have at least two backups of important material, and one of
those backups should be kept a safe distance from the other,
preferably not in the same building. The reasoning is obvious.
