With it while there are problems. The foreign markets are practically
closed for us now, because of the customs legislation. But we try to
search for ways of co-operation with the foreign data recovery
companies...

Speaking from the USA; I don't know that labor is a big part of the
cost of data recovery. The serious data recovery companies maintain
class 100 clean rooms, Keep lots of expertese on every model disk and
tape drive ever made, and lots of spare parts for same. They can
charge big bucks for this because they are ready when you call. I
imagine a good part of their work is paid for by insurance companies
after fire or flood.

I know some of these companies do forensic work and have relationships
with the TLA goverment agencies. Lots of large commercial customers
might not want to send their data out of the country. I don't see any
of this going overseas.

In USA is some highly professional data recovery companies. I know one
of them ;-). But in many countries they are not present at all.

That depends on how you specify 'hard' as there appears to be no
specific jumper for that, just a specific combination of jumpers.
But yes, you must be rather unlucky to accidentally put
one jumper wrong and hit that specific combination unless
you (think to) set AND 32GB-clip AND 15-head translation
and didn't notice that it is actually 'auto spin disable'.

But if so, what about the drive not being shown during POST?
And Windows?
