Steve, Tom, and Thomas, et al
Thanks for your attempts to help. I uninstalled and reinstalled, but the
problem remains. After reading your discussion of how to kill the PWS, I
have decided to just to work around it.
I think now that my decision to upgrade from FP98 to FP2003 was misguided -
definitely it was uninformed.
Thanks again for your time(s)

Kevin

Thanks, Steve
I appreciate your efforts.

Hi Kevin.

We can fix this, it's just going to be a matter of me rebooting my memory as to how it's
done.
It isn't a standard procedure where I can point you to a MSFT knowledge base article.
I'll try to give you more "specific" info tomorrow, even if I have to recreate the
problem.

Kevin,
Try this first.

If memory serves me correctly, FP 98 keeps it's disk based webs in a location similar to:
C:\FrontPage Webs\Content\webname where webname is the name of the folder that actually
contains the web contents

Using Windows Explorer browse to that location,, right click on a web folder and then
select copy.
Browse to a new location on the drive and click paste.
I'm thinking this might disassociate the web from PWS ( which is the folder named Server
in FrontPage Webs )

Then open FrontPage 2003, click File > Open Site and browse to the new location, right
click the folder and you should have a prompt "Convert To Web" on the right click context
menu. Select it if so.

When it's done converting, see if FP 2003 will open it as a web.

Steve,

You are correct about the folder where the FP98 web was stored. The
location is "FrontPage Webs/Content/<folder name>

I copied that folder to another location. I launched FP2003. Under File
there is an "Open" choice (not Open Site). I right clicked the new folder,
but had no prompt to Convert to Web.

Open... will not open a web, it will open a loose page. The option on the
File menu in FP2003 is "Open Site". If you cannot see that option make
sure the menu is fully expanded by clicking on the arrow at the bottom.

When you open the web, you may not be asked to convert to a web, but run
Tools->Update Hyperlinks to update the meta data in the _vti* folders.

Thank you, Ron
I followed your instructions and it worked exactly as you said. This seems
to have taken care of my problem.
