In FP 2003 I cannot get it to create a new site in the folder I want it
placed in.

I try to place the new one page site in the folder that already contains my
other sites. How can I do this?

Thanks

You need to create the web first, save it with a name ( which will create a new
folder for it ) and then create the new page.

If you want to create a new web inside a web, you need to create a new empty in
FrontPage, and then have FrontPage convert it to a sub web.

Oops, I meant to say:

FP forced me to use a folder it wanted to use. I then went into the desktop
file explorer and dragged the new web site from where FP put it to another
folder that holds all my other sites. Is this the correct way to create
sites?

Is there a way to force FP to place the new site in a folder that I
specify... without it saying the is "no server on http://peter port 80" ?

You can specify the name of the folder when you create a new web.

No, not really. Create a new "disk based" web and you can browse to any "Save"
location you want.

If you don't have IIS installed, you need to create "disk based" webs.

I want to create empty disk based sites so that I can import my server based into them. FP will not allow me to create empty one page webs in the same folder as all my others sites reside.

1.) What is the best way to create empty disk based webs?

2.) Once created in a folder on my hard drive, can I use explorer to just
drag that new folder into the folder that holds my other 50 sites?

Thank you.

Presuming your "50 other sites" are all Disc based webs in a folder like say C:\MyWebs
When you use File New Site either
- type the new folder in the Dialog as say C:\MyWebs\NewWebName
- or use the browse button, and browse to C:\MyWebs\ then use the Create New Folder button

Best to never copy FP web between location with Windows Explorer or any other application, always
open the web in FP and then use the File Menu | Publish Web / Site command.

Thank you.

You can turn it off for messages you reply to, but you can't turn it off
for other people's replies.

It does serve a purpose though, as it identifies new text in the reply.

Steve,

I just installed the upgrade FrontPage 2003 over my old FrontPage 98.
For some reason I cannot get to my old webs. I get a message that that
there is no web server on port 80. I can open a specific file without
problem, but not the web.
I reinstalled the upgrade, but there were not really any options during the
process.

Any suggestions for what I am doing wrong?

Kevin

Do you have the FrontPage Web Server or Personal Web Server installed and running?

FrontPage 98 used a feature called PWS ( Personal Web Server ) which is not supported in
Windows 2000 or Windows XP.

If, when you installed FP 98 you did a normal install and let it install PWS on a 2K or XP
machine,
PWS is going to interfere with FP as you have just found out.

You are going to need to uninstall / remove PWS and to be truthful it is a genuine "pita"
to get rid of in 2K or XP because it installs itself as a Non Plug and Play driver, which
the system sees as / treats as a service.

How comfortable are you with killing and removing services via Compute Management >
Services and Computer Management > Device Manager??

Thanks for the quick reply, Steve
I am not comfortable at all (have never done) killing and removing services.

How about if I just uninstall FrontPage 2003, then reinstall FrontPage 98
without the PWS (assuming I can choose to do that). Then reinstall the
upgrade.
Would that solve the problem?

Kevin

You don't need to install FP98 to use it as an upgrade, just insert the CD when prompt for a
qualifying product. So you can uninstall FP98/PWS and FP2003.

Uninstall both 2003 and 98 and "hopefully" it will uninstall PWS.
However, I'm not 100% certain that PWS will uninstall with it.
The reason I say this is because I did the exact same thing.

MVP Tom Willette got a huge chuckle out of it.

Restart the machine
Then ( as Thomas said ) start the 2003 install and when it ask for a qualifying product
put the 98 CD in the drive and point the machine to it.

Thomas,

I am not at all clear on how to go about uninstalling the FP 98 PWS, since I
already have FP 2003 installed.
Do I need to do something via "Compute Management Services and Computer
Management Device Manager??
Kevin

Steve: IIRC, the PWS should be uninstalled as a separate entity. It may be
listed in Add/Remove programs. Been so long, I just can't remember.

I'm going to try it right now.

Been a while for me too Tom.
Can't remember if the issues it caused for me were with FP or IIS and extensions.

I did figure out how to get rid of it, and I remember I had to kill a service reboot, and
then delete it from the "normally hidden" Non Plug and Play Driver section in Device
Manager and reboot again
Thing is I can't remember what it was called in the Non Plug and Play Driver section.

I posted the procedure here a long time ago, it might be archived in Google!!
