CPU insertion causes system to shut down after a few seconds

The biggest unknown is what is actually happening. Yes it
shuts down in a manner that suggests a current overload
on the power supply. What remains to be done is to figure
out why. However, the first step is always to find out if
the power supplies are really working properly. You
need to check particularly the +12, +5 and +3.3 lines.
Also is on low enough and is power good ok?

ok - I understand this - but surely simply replacing the psu with another
known working (remember we have no load at fault stage) psu eliminates the
psu? - Therefore does the interaction between the cpu and ram overheat the
motherboard? - I am very sorry if I am still not getting it! - thanks
 
Then have you tested the ram elsewhere, or
tried a different known good ram stick? You basically
have no valid information at this point.

Forget this guy, he's just being intentionally counterproductive... If
you swapped to another psu you are sure is good then it's probably not
that. You say you've replaced everything but the mb... Guess what? It's
the mb. www.resellerratings.com choose a good store.
