Well, this week may be particularly bad. I got LOTS of orders. <G>

I figure I get at least $5 for each copy of Norton sold.

This week? You're an optimist. They've been causing problems for years.

One of several [censored] Norton sagas in the past week! <grrr>
Hi Sandy,

http://aumha.net/viewtopic.php?t=13727

There's a bit of a Norton saga on this thread which ended with a
re-install of XP. So, problem is now resolved albeit without knowing
exactly what caused it. I had already replaced the msvcrt.dll file and
deleted all other copies. Unfortunately it didn't resolve it.

Anyhow, many thanks for your help on this.

Kind regards

ncpl

:

Go back to the original advice. Replace the likely corrupted file.
Start, run, msconfig. Select 'expand file'

Type the name of the file in the 'file to restore' window. Hopefully
you will not need to enter any more information than that.

Further update....

Have followed some fixes kindly supplied by Jim E via the HJT log.
However,
problem still persists.

Kind of stuck to know what to do next.

advice appreciated

Just a quick update:-

I've posted details on aumha and swi forums and re-run all the
shredder, adaware apps etc.

Today, the error log send to MS actually returned with an Online
Crash Analysis regarding add-ons. I have followed the workarounds
and also disabled the 3rd party browser extensions. No
improvement

I haven't had any feedback yet regarding the HJT log.

Any other avenues to explore would be really appreciated.

Best regards
ncpl

When all else fails, HijackThis
(http://aumha.net/downloads/hijackthis.zip) is the preferred
tool
to use. It will help you to both identify and remove any
hijackware/spyware.

PA,

I have now followed all the links and run all recommended apps

Problem is not resolved though.

What else can I try ?

Many thanks

What is the recommendation for hijackware ?

I think you'll find the problem is being caused by
hijackware.

When you "use CTRL+C" in IE or OE, when exactly does the
crash occur,
when you use that key combination? When you try to
paste
(CTRL+V) it
somewhere? How much data are you copying?

What are your settings here?...

Drag and drop or copy and paste

* Restricted Sites is default for OE6 in WinXP.

I have uninstalled the yahoo toolbar....no effect.

I found 13 files for msvcrt.dll in various places and
renamed them all
except the one in the system32 folder.

The link for dll libraries tool is for win98. Is this
correct ? Problem is with XP Pro.

Version of msvcrt.dll installed is 7.0.2600.2180 which
seems to belong to SP2. If it is corrupted, how do I
replace it ? I don't really know what the reference to
system file checker/msconfig is.

I get the feeling we may be getting closer
though....thanks for your
continued support

Also make sure you do not have more than one copy
of msvcrt.dll installed on your system - rename
any
*not* in c:\windows\system.

Check that the version you have installed is
correct as per this
link. It is possible another programme has
replaced
the correct version of the DLL with a bad copy or
incorrect version.

http://support.microsoft.com/servicedesks/fileversion/dllinfo.asp?

It has been reported that replacing msvcrt.dll
using System File
Checker/MSCONFIG has fixed the problem for some
users.

Yahoo Companion is known to cause this error
sometimes. Instructions on uninstalling here:

PA Bear,
Many thanks. Have tried the long shot. No joy.
Still crashes.

Will look into the hijackware next

We need more information about the crash.
There will be a details button or
hyperlink. Use it and provide more
information about the error message - we
need to know what modules (files) are
involved in the crash.

In either app, if i use 'ctrl C', the
app
will terminate and a message
sends
to MS.
This is becoming a real pain. I'm not
sure what to try and re-install or how.
I'm on XP Pro SP2. The problem doesn't
exist with other apps e.g. Word.

I've also posted in the OE area and have
followed a few support trails but
nothing
seems to fit the things that i'm seeing
.

Help much appreciated.
