Is there a way to convert a movie maker project from MSWMM format to an avi
file format?

I want to be able to save my movies onto a DVD.

The project file is merely a data file that tells Moviemaker what is in the
content of your Movie. You need to use the Save to my Computer option and
save the movie to your hard drive in DV-AVI format.

Then open your DVD burning software, import the DV-AVI file and create the
DVD.

Thank you for your help.

I tried to save the file to my computer, but there is no option to save the
file in DV-AVI format. I only have the option to save in Best Quality, Best
fit to file size, and Other settings.

Do I need to choose one of these to have the file saved in DV-AVI format?

Go under your 'other settings,' and you should be able to
see where you can select DV-AVI.

Thanks Jimmy.

Unfortunately, I am not able to choose that option. When I look, this
option is grayed out when I try to capture my video and when I try to save
the project, it's not an option. I don't know what I am missing.

I was able to find the DVD-AVI file format to save to my computer, however
when I burn the information to my DVD, I am not able to view the movie on my
television. I don't know what I need to do.

DVD players do not play AVI files. A DVD has it's video stored as an MPEG-2
file, but the extension is .VOB. You cannot make a DVD compliant disc using
MovieMaker. You have to use a third party app such as Sonic MyDVD.

You are obviously struggling trying to learn MM2. Perhaps you should visit

www.papajohn.org

and use the plethora of information that Papjohn has posted on how to use
MM2.

Please be sure to come back here and drop him a "thank you" for his website.

Thank you Bobby for letting me know that I cannot use this file format on my
DVD's. Is Sonic MyDVD expensive or is it a free download?

Bobby,
I was reviewing the www.papajohn.org website and noticed that it talked
about using TMPGEnc to transfer a DV-AVI file to MPEG2 file. I went to the
website and it seems as though you can download several different versions,
however I don't know which would be the best to download. I have NERO
already to burn the DVD, but I need to have TMPGEnc to transfer a DV-AVI file
to MPEG2 file to complete the transfer.

Can you assist me on which would be the best to download? I am just not
sure which would be the best.

Jen.

Once you save your movie to your computer as a DV-AVI or even High Quality
NTSC (both work fine for creating DVD's) you then use that saved file to
import into your DVD creation software. You don't need to convert your saved
file to mpg2....your DVD software does it for you.

I can burn the DV-AVI file to my DVD, however it is not being read when I put
it into my DVD player to watch on the television.

I am using NERO to burn my DVD and it doesn't seem to be changing the format
for me automatically. Am I missing something?

Hi Jen,
I am new to all this myself and I hope I'm not out of line by trying to
help someone when I know very little myself but, I will share what I have
learned so far. I made my first slide show play in the DVD player by using
TPMG and converting the file to a Video-CD which is Mpeg 1. Then I used the
CDEasy software which you can find the link to on Papa Johns site. CDEasy
only accepts Mpeg 1. The only problem is that Mpeg 1 is poor quality but at
least I made it work. I was so excited lol. I am trying to figure out how to
make the slide show an Mpeg 2 that will play on my DVD player and I have
posted that question so keep an eye on my posts and keep reading like I am
and maybe we'll figure all this out.

Hi Jen,

Seems like you have it figured out well... just a slightly different path to
make the MPEG-2 file with TMPGEnc and use DVD creation software instead of
CDEasy.... or let the DVD software make the MPEG-2 file instead of using
TMPGEnc (at least for the first time).

Hey Jen,

I'm no expert, but I can tell you about my experience. DVD +/-R on some
players make a difference. Most posts that I've ready say that older players
tend to require -R, I got lucky I've burned both, and both work in the DVD
Player that feeds my TV. However, the -R discs seem to work when they want
to??? Some times I have to open and close the player letting the player go
through its load sequence several times. Sometimes it plays the DVD fine,
other times it say it can't recognize the disc... Ah the joys of technology,
wait 40 mins for the file to be MPEG-2 encoded, then another 30 to burn the
DVD, only to pop it in the DVD Player an no dice!!! But when it works, it's
sweet.

Thanks PapaJohn.
I tried to let the DVD software make the MPEG-2 file for me, but that didn't
seem to work. I will try using the TMPGEnc and see if this will work. I
didn't see an option to convert the file to MPEG-2. Does it automatically do
this or do I have to do something? I am using NERO.

Use the File > Project Wizard.... the interface and options depend on which
version you're using....

The MPEG-2 option isn't free for use beyond the free trial period... if it's
not included, it could he the version or the registration. I'm using the
Plus 2.5 version which has the option to render MPEG-2 files.

Thanks again. I will have to review my version and determine if I have this
option to change the format to MPEG-2.

Jen,
If you are using Nero Ultra 6, this may help you.

Follow these steps and it may work:
Save Windows Movie Maker file as DV-AVI.
Open Nero
Click on Make Your Own DVD-Video
Click on Add Video File
Find your saved video and click on it
Click Next
Choose opening menu provided by Nero
Next
Burn to - choose drive
Burn

You do not have to use any other conversion software if you are using Nero 6.

Hope this helps.
Pat

Thank you Pat. I will try this tonight and see if this works. I am not sure
what version I have of Nero, but I will look into this further.

Jen,
To find out what version you have (practically of everything) click on
"Help" then "About Nero" or Windows, etc.

Also, be sure your DVD player will play DVD-R's if that is what you burn or
DVD+R's if that is what you burn. Most DVD players play both. Older ones
play DVD-R's.
Keep us informed.
