My favorite Freeware programs consist of single executables, or "1 File

there?

I have well over 200 of them in my collection, and keep only the best. I
define them simply as any program that will run in any folder with the
single executable. I allow only 1 INI or DAT file of the same name to
accompany the program, EG Slowview.exe and Slowview.ini to store the
preferences.

You will be surprised how many Freeware programs are 1 File Wonders. I know
I probably shouldn't, but I often strip out the HLP, HTM, and TXT files that
install, and use just the EXE file. I'm addicted to 1 File Wonders. :)

Hi:

I wonder if you would be willing to share your list of the 1 file wonders...
I would certainly be most thankful.

Yeah, I know what you mean.

When I'm troubleshooting computers I like nothing more then running a one
file wonders from
my locked memstick (best virus protection). Or to run it from an cd (When I
have my Freeware Power CD Ready)

I especialy like the stinger from NAI. But I also like keyfinder (When bad
systems go on strike) to retrieve the serialnumber of windows, so I could
reinstall it again with the same number. Then there is Sirene (the file
renamer) It does an absolute great job.

I have a directory called "NoInstallUtilities" in which I have programs
that don't need to install: ever ready after a S.O. reinstall or when I
use W98 instead of my usual W2000!

Yup, me too. This list was accurate last June. I compiled it for a
local charity. We collect old PCs and recycle them. All of these progs
were put on a single CD so that as we pick old PCs we can evaluate,
clean and repair them. All progs were accessed from a simple menu
written in Delphi (Found on a magazine cover disc - does that count as
freeware?)

To be very short:
At the moment it is only a small collection on my memory stick (128 MB) of
one file wonders I use when My clients mess up their computers (I'm
self-employed)

The Detour:
Unfortunately, I've just started compiling myself. But I'm taking it a
little bit less strict then the one file policy. it will be more like a
"It-can-run-from-a-cd-without-installing-or-manipulating-the-operatingsystem
-software" cd. But I still have a long way to go. To be honest, I also doubt
I'm making an iso out of it, as I simply don't have the space to upload it
to when it is finished. (My company website is only 125 MB, and a photo
gallery is taking a lot of it) As my provider does not seam to allow
binaries to be downloaded or uploaded in newsgroups, I need to think of
something else. (No I won't change providers, I ride along with adsl and the
provider of an other company in the same building - Yeah I'm cheap ;-)

Anyway at this moment there is nothing I have that you couldn't download
yourself on the net. Main source is http://www.nonags.com, and since a
couple of days: the links from this group

I'll promise to give this group a call if I have an entire cd full of real
freeware
"It-can-run-from-a-cd-without-installing-or-manipulating-the-operatingsystem
-software" (Sjeez, even the acronym would be to long)

Thanks... ouch... I wish I have a site to suggest, but I don't. Still, thank
you. Then again, perhaps a list would also be OK, I could use it as a
reference and start hunting for it.

I wonder if this could be done. Through this NG, I found a really nice FTP
server, Quick 'N' Easy FTP server. I tested it and it seems to work though I
have not tried using it for heavy-duty work.

I am on an ADSL and since my puter is rarely off, I wonder if I could have a
crack at hosting it for a while and others can take turns if they want to.

It'd be interesting to see a list, even without the executables
themselves.

I, too, really like this sort of app -- I suspect they're getting more
and more rare these days, though. (It's got to the point that I'm
quite surprised -- pleasantly -- when I download a program and find
only a .exe file and a read-me.)

Ditto, but they occasionally pop up.

I was surprised to find that "Media Player Classic" is a single
executable which doesn't install to the registry -- except, of course,
if you ask it to set itself as the default for certain file formats (in
which case it obviously has to register as the default program for
those formats.)

I know it can be work to dig out a working link to an executable with no
help file that you may have found awhile ago.

Can you list the executables you've found with name, one line
description, link if you have it?

That way we can search for a file, as needed.

Thanks,

Mike Sa

Sorry, but I don't have a list. :(

Man, that's a lot of work. It would take probably 3-4 hours of steady work
to compile a decent list.

Here's a folder shot. It looks ratty, but everything's there. :)
