I had already taken care of all the BIOS, and that didn't solve my problem.
I kept looking around for anything that had a power management tab, and I
think I found the root of my problem.
I went to Device Manager, then Network Adaptors. Is this the NIC you are
talking about?
Anyway, when unclicked "allow this device to wake the computer", it seems
to
have solved my sleep problem.

(there is even a paragraph on that tab, warning that if you allow the
device
to wake you computer, it might wake when you don't want it to.)

If the HP "Professionals" call me back, I will give them this
solution!!!!

Thank you everyone. If it weren't for the comments sent to my posting, I
would never have found a solution, (except to turn off the cable modem).

Sorry, forgot not everyone knows the "lingo" . . .

NIC = Network Interface Card

try Control Panel - Network Adaptors
find the listing under this that has the Power Management tab and unclick
"allow this device to wake the computer" (there is even a warning on that
tab about this)

It solved my "Sleep" problem

Can you be more specific?

I'm not seeing "Network Adaptors" in Control Panel.

A: Because it messes up the order in which people normally read text.
Q: Why is top-posting such a bad thing?

Try "Control Panel/Device Manager/Network Adapters double-click the adapter
(or right-click and chose Properties) then select the Power Management tab

Gotcha. Guess what. I didn't have to uncheck it. It was unchecked
already. :-)

As I stated previously, this problem isn't unique to Vista. I have the
same problem in Linux and Windows XP.

It's a BIOS setting/issue. The problem is, I don't understand the
options in the BIOS (-this, S-that, S-that [something]).

I had similar problem with my HP. I had to turn off all scheduled system
hard drive defrags. Vista kept waking up to defrag the hard drive.

After having ttried numerous tips on this subject, this finally works. Many
thanks

Device Manager or from a Run prompt DevMgmt.Msc [Enter]
Expand the Universal Serial Bus Controllers category. You'll
find at least 4-8 Root Hubs.

Where do i find the USB Root Hubs?

I've had this problem too, on a home network, and one of the many posts on
this subject (can't find it right now) worked for me. Basically it said to go
into Power Options from the Control Panel, then 'edit plan settings', then
'change advanced power settings'. Expand 'multimedia settings' and make sure
that under 'When sharing media' it says 'allow the computer to sleep'.

May not work for everyone, but it did for me.

You need to right click on the specific network adapter card under Network
Adapters (there may be several, choose the one you are working on) and
choose properties. Then you will see all the tabs.

I hate people that just post useless comments, it really adds to the
frustration other people are experiencing, trying to fix a problem. If
you don't have a solution, just shut the hell up.

Anyways, where was I?

I solved this problem by *unplugging a USB device* that was in constant
communication with my PC, IE: a game controller or web cam, in my case
it was the Guitar Hero game control guitar. Why this kept my PC from
sleeping is beyond me.

There are also other settings I discovered while digging for a solution
that you could also try:

(Vista)
START/CONTROL PANEL/POWER OPTIONS/ CHANGE PLAN SETTINGS

Then find the CHANGE ADVANCED PLAN SETTINGS link. From there you can
expand all of the different settings for all your devices separately.

Good luck.

There is a setting somewhere (or there *might be* a setting somewhere (or
at least that's what I think)) in the Device manager entry for a device
that says "allow this device to wake up the computer". Maybe you can find
and uncheck that option for the GH guitar.

Sorry for the uncertainty. It's been a while since I dealt with a similar
issue, and I'm too lazy right now to check further (actually it's just that
I have time constraints at this moment).
