computer won't boot into XP

At this stage it could be anything ... but you may get some help from your PC shop, depending on how friendly they are, you could get them to check the system out for you.

There is only so far we can go and what we can achieve via these forums. ;)

It could well be a "problem" indeed with the HD, they do fail, but I'm not convinced.

I did forget to ask if you have turned OFF "auto-restart on error" ... if you haven't, do so, it will, or should, give you the famous Blue Screen of Death ... that in turn will give me more information, especially if you post the exact error message in it's entirety.

Most "re-boots" are cause of some Windows error with some other software ... but not always, and there lies the rub.

;)

i turned off auto restart, got that nasty blue screen. i wrote down the error message and will post it later as i'm at work and not at home

I ain't going anywhere, it's raining and I don't like getting wet unintentionally.

:D

ok here's that dumb blue screen message:

KERNEL_DATA_INPAGE_ERROR

Disable BIOS memory options such A CACHING OR SHADOWING.

Technical information:

STOP: 0X0000007A (0xC03E184C, 0xC00000OE, 0xF8613759, 0x11B4C860)

Ntfs.sys - Address F8613759 bse at F85B2000, daestamp 41107eea

Beginning dump of physical memory

Stop 0x7A is usually caused by a bad block (sector) in a paging file, a virus, a disk controller error, or failing RAM. In rare cases, it is caused when nonpaged pool resources run out. It is also caused by defective hardware.
Well I'm sorry to say but you will probably need to replace your HD.

The big clue here is "Ntfs.sys" it is causing your error ... that is, the HD file system XP uses. I would suggest you re-format the drive using the XP CD, do not use quick format but do a full format, this sometimes can "cure" the problem ... if it resurfaces, then replace the HD.

:)

i've tried formatting the drive but it tells me i can't format it.

i've managed to get an old HD from a friend so how to i put XP on this one? do i use my XP cd?

ok but what about the latter part? can i install winXP on it using my setup cd?

when i buy my new HD, should i format it first then run XP?

any chance this prob might be my graphics card?

i've put the graphics card in another computer and i got this blue screen error message:

A problem was detected and Windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.

The problem seems to be caused by the following file: ati2dvag

The device driver got stuck in an infinite loop. Ths usually indicates a problem with the device itself or with the device driver programming the hardware incorrectly.

Please check for hardware updates.

Yes! ... if the HD is new enough and big enough.

:)

i've put the graphics card in another computer and i got this blue screen error message:
I would expect it to do that too ... why are you trying to knacker another PC up?

just trying to eliminate some scenarios!

so i guess i should buy a new GFX card too then?
