I am having an ongoing problem with my PC suddenly shutting down for no apparent reason. It usually happens when I am running a video conversion program (e.g., avi to mp4; DVD Shrink). At first I thought it was one of my hard drives overheating, so I had the operating system moved to the IDE drive from one of the SATA drives and upgraded the fans. However, the problem is continuing. Disk Sentinel tells me the disks are all fine, and I replaced my video card just a few months ago. I am running Windows XP Pro on an AMD Dual Core 4200+ with 2 megs of RAM. I have three internal disks and one external disk.

Thanks!!

Hi,

Sounds like an overheating problem if its happening when you are running conversion programs, this would be when you computer in under load. Have you made sure that all the fans inside the case are clean and free of any dust? try running with the side case off or put a fan next to it and see if it happens still.

Regards

Hi ... thanks for the quick response.
I actually tried that. I removed the side panel and set up a big honkin' fan blowing into the inside of the computer. It was okay for a while ... but ultimately the same result!

Hey here's an idea before we all go onto it could be overheating etc..Try removing what ever program you are doing the converting with...Simple as that, it could be something that is corrupt in the program..You say it shuts down suddenly but does the comp just power down to black screen or what...?

Exactly my thoughts:thumb: ;)

Yep I agree I had a program once each time I used it the computer would reboot and I removed the program and problem was solved. At least you know that your computer is not overheating. :)

Me thinks you have 2GIG of RAM well I hope you have:)
I doubt it would be over-heating to that extent with the job in hand? What program you using for avi to mp4; DVD Shrink?

That’s correct it does but after my first post I remembered that I came across this before and it was the program. But I did not edit my post and include that.

If your not in bed by 12.00 then go home:lol: ;)

Download and run Core Temp. That will take you five minutes. Run your conversion program when it shuts the pc down. Restart and look at the Core Temp log, that will tell you if the cpu is overheating.

I think I've come to the conclusion that it's probably the CPU overheating. One thing I didn't mention: I installed a new CPU (upgraded from a 3400+ to a 4200) but I didn't upgrade the CPU fan. Although did a lot of research before I installed it, I wonder if I (a) did it right, or (b) should have also upgraded the sink fan. I think I will take it in & have them check the installation & replace the sink fan. I may also have them upgrade the PSU ... it certainly won't hurt!

Sound like a good idea??

Many Thanks!!

What temps are you getting with Core Temp??

The two core temps are 30 degrees & 34 degrees C. The "TCaseMax" temp (I don't know what that is) is 67 degrees C.

Your CPU temps are fine, is this what they are when you try to convert a dvd? Not to sure etiher what Case Max is?

Thanks,

Wiz

Your temps are fine no problem there... As wiz has said:nod:

The problem lies elsewhere... take out that program your using for avi to mp4; DVD Shrink> Run the PC for a while and then see what happens

If the CPU were installed in-correctly I dout you would still be using the PC.
If the temps are as you say I cant see a problem with anything other than a program causing the aforesaid.

TCaseMax is a program for Monitoring temps [Max for your CPU] So you are well within that safe area?

Oh Itsme, how are we going to get our point across....You say your problem only happens whe you use this certain program..Well then Delete the fecking program...How more simple can the answer be written....????

I'll try to be really clear about this ... if it was only one program or a couple of programs, I would do that. It happens when I run any video conversion program, including DVD Shrink; Aimersoft Video Converter; Cucusoft Ultimate DVD + Video Converter Suite, Videorama & others. I have used DVD Shrink for many years and have never had a problem with it before recently. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling some of these programs. Appearances to the contrary, I am not a complete idiot.

The computer just powers off very suddenly ... no Blue Screen of Death, no gradual power down ... just snap!! its off.

I'll try a conversion & monitor the CPU temps while I am doing so.

Ok quite a bit different to your initial post then..Even still sounds a bit strange..Overheating problems normaly give you some kind of warning...Beeps when pc is getting ready to shut down etc....
