Computer running at snail speed!

Dear all

This is the current situation:

I restored the settings back to 7 days ago when things were ok.
I unistalled and reinstalled NAV and all was well until the PC repeatedly asked me to restart the PC which I did repetedly!
NAV says it can't finish installation until I restart (which I have)
Daughter's MSN messenger keeps signing itself in without any action on my part
NO viruses at all showing

I am a patient person but my patience is fraying somewhat. I am not convinced about viruses, spyware and the like because I have been absolutaely vigilant since my last escapade.

I am somewhat reluctant to do a wipe clean and start again.

Is there some middle ground and/or any further advice for me?

Kind regards

I'll ask again 'What programs are you using to combat nasties and are they up to date?'

Apart from Nortons. And have you run these programs recently?

Im as clueless as you are, have you got the lastest updates for you antivirus, spy, and adware removal?

Sorry for taking so long to answer yr questions Flops but I have been trying to sort this.

I am running NAV (now successfully reinstalled), Webroot, MS antispy, Adaware. All areup to date and run every day.

The issue I am now trying to sort is daughter's MSN signing in automatically on my login. What's happened is that she has used my login and opted for the 'sign me in automatically'. I have trillions of things popping up all the time (people wanting to converse). How can I stop this one on my login?? I have taken it out of my start up settings but it still keeps happening.

I found hundreds of photos that the kids had downloaded (just mates and things like that) which are downloaded onto CD, so perhaps the volume was causing some loss in speed.

I dunno really as PCs are not my area of skill.

Any help on the MSN issue would be great!

Kind regards

Go to msn click tools -> options -> general

and de-select all the "start with windows" and "log me in automatically"

My computer is flying again and the Webroot came up with the old Rundll issue which (as we know) is some dodgy Porteugese porn site/dialler. Thought I had got rid of that one ages ago!

Kind regards

OK Gabriella, all looks good on the prevention side, thanks for answering :)

How much disk space do you have left on your hard disk? (My Computer, highlight C drive, info will display as a text balloon nearby and also in panel on left).

And are you saying you burnt all the MSN downloads to CD then deleted them all? Assuming it was one CD's worth, that will still only give you an extra 700Mb or so, at most.

Did KGB's MSN suggestions work? Is it running any quicker now?

Gabriella:

I missed your last post as I was posting.

I just noticed all looks good now. Excellent :)

I would really recommend Spyware Blaster if your offspring use MSN.

I installed it on my daughter's computer (and she's on MSN a lot) and have had no major problems since installing it.

It's a freebie and can be downloaded from Here

Dear Flops

89.7GB spare on C drive. No, didn't burn MSN stuff - it was digital photos/webcam photos etc.......

The MSN issue is sorted and it seems quicker but I must say that last nite's happenings were strange and not easily accounted for by me.

Thanks for your patience!

Me again Flops

Re: Spyware Blaster, which download location to choose - Major Geeks 1,2,3 or 4 or Planet Mirror?

Thanks

OK, thanks Flops. Now installed and running.

Do you think I need to keep the NAV, Webroot, MS Antispy and Adaware. It seems a fair bit to the non initiated but if it's needed then it will stay!

Keep NAV, MS Anti-Spyware, SpywareBlaster and Adaware ... SpySweeper can be dropped if you haven't bought a subscription ... I still use ALL the above and SS, belts-n-braces me.

Hopefully it was a NAV problem and is now back to some sort of normality with your PC
