But isn't that illegal in its own right?

<copying and pasting from another post I made in this thread>

Not necessarily. Depending on its specific function and abilities the
law can be easily bent to allow such a form, especially if it were
setup to where it creates an icon say in your taskbar, which would
allow for instant removal should you click on it and press "OK" with a
dialogue box explaining what it is and what it's doing. At that point
you're still giving people an option to not have it on their system
and as such can't technically be called a worm/virus.

There is no profit in it being destructive, except as a threat for
extortion purposes. There are lots of ways to make money off this beast
of a botnet. The usual - spam, click fraud, etc.

I'm wondering if they have something completely new in mind. The idea
mentioned for computing for resale (a la "Cloud Computing") sounds possible.

The size of this botnet alone makes it worth worrying about. Of course,
I'm surprised every time the Internet *does* work.

well see that is a very good call but many viruses and such are not just
created for that purpose in alot of cases it is i guess you could say a show
of "military" power kinda of sense to where the person(s) could easily brag
to other virus creators or such about how good, powerful, and smart they are
for doing something big but this is something on a whole new scale i don't
understand why they would do this in the process of destroying computers b/c
then they would easily be able to be caught and i am actually surprised with
the technology that governments have to invade peoples privacy that they are
not able to find this person(s)

You are in bad need of learning grammar and sentence structure. Do you
actually expect many people to read that tripe?

Sure. And if you read the article just poasted to /. you'll see that
some of the detection tools are illegal in Germany and the UK...

Why are they supposedly illegal? Since they could be classified as *gasp* a
hacker tool?
(****ing rediculous) but the toll is neutral; its the *intent* that
counts.

You'd have to grep the slashdot article, read the comments section, and
find the relevant poast where somwon links to some docs describing the
law. IIRC its basicly this:if you posess a SW tool that can be used for
hacking, you're assumed guilty in the UK.
Its ****ing rediculous...but the gubmint in the UK is shite anyhow.

So i guess that everyone in the UK should be arrested since if you have a
text editor and a big enough internet pipe you could probably do a
pingflood.

I guess they need to test all internet users now in the UK with a
polygraph and ask them, "can you hack a computer?"

Soon they'll be requireing *all* users to have webcams so the rozzers
can see who's looking at the nasty internets.

<snip - spam from eBay seller>

Your attempt to spam your auction has failed. You did not want to
identify your auction in an attempt to prevent users from reporting your
spam. So you used a search at eBay but that results in several matches
besides your own. Ah, too bad, no one knows which auction is yours.
