Run Disk Cleanup, a part of Windows. It will do both of the above.

With rare exceptions, cleaning up what you call "excess files" will
not make the computer run better. It will just save you some disk
space.

My recommendation is to stay far away from third party programs that
purport to make your computer run better, whether by deleting files or
doing anything else. They are unlikely to improve anything and may
well get you into serious trouble.

Windows has its own cleanup function.

Right-click on the drive in Windows Explorer | General tab | Disk
Cleanup.

CCleaner.
The double C is the correct spelling.

Yea, that's what I use and it is safe so don't listen to the naysayers.

Right!
....and when a computer amateur accidentally uses the registry cleaner and
Windows won't boot, you'll be right there to help them. Now I know why you
chose the name "gumby" and the reason for it.

Good Point.
" When using CCleaner DO Not use the Registry Cleaner function. !!"

Guess I should stick to Windows cleanup

FDLeyda is correct. CCleaner is an excellent program. Just avoid using
their registry cleaner.

CCleaner is an excellent product, and I also recommend it. And yes,
it's safe, as long as you avoid using its registry cleaning Function.

No registry cleaner is safe to use. Although CCleaner's registry
cleaner *is* safer than most others, it is *not* risk free. And since
cleaning the registry has no benefit, I strongly recommend not doing
it.

Well, Michael, along with me there are thousands, perhaps millions, of
other users that use CCleaner with no problems at all so if it causes
you issues then it is you who is the nub and not us. Most power users
use CCleaner, end of argument.

No, don't listen to the Microsoft weenies, they know jack shit. It is
much easier to clean up your system with CCleaner than using the one
built into Windows.

It offers to make a backup of the registry if you do opt to have it
remove obsolete entries. I use it and it has never hijacked my PC yet.

Except when some shitty software leaves something in the registry that
causes an error everytime Windows boots. I've seen it happen numerous
times so it is not like the registry was such a great idea in the first
place. If it is dangerous to clean out junk entries then Microsoft were
stupid to come up with the idea of it in the first place.

Winamp was causing a slow boot issue on my PC just yesterday so decided
to nuke Winamp and you can be damn sure I used Revo Unininstaller to
uninstall it because the uninstaller for Winamp thought it would be ok
with me if it left files and registry entries behind, lots of registry
entries. Revo Uninstaller uses the built in uninstaler then searches for
crap that was left behind. You guys would say no to that too but I say
it's my PC and I'll use it however I see fit. I just found out that
Microsoft's MCE was checking for updates every day just because I ran
MCE once. I don't use MCE so uninstalled it. Gues what? I was in task
manger and saw a task for MCE to check for updates everyday even though
I had uninstalled it already. WTF for? That task got deleted pronto.
I've uninstalled WMP too because I used it once to setup media sharing
network and even though I tired to turn that off it never would and was
always running as a process.

This is my PC, I am in control of it and not Microsoft.

If you are using Vista, disk cleanup is the best program to delete temp
files.

I use Windows Defender's Software Explorer or AVG Internet Security's
System Tools to delete "startup entries" that are left over from
uninstalled programs.

You're correct CCleaner's registry cleaner is not safe. No registry
cleaning program is safe. That includes Windows Live OneCare.

CCleaner is more than just a registry cleaner. You could use CCleaner to
clean temp files (from more than just what folders Windows scans for)
and delete auto-run apps that are no longer installed. Windows clean
system app does not remove temp internet files from Firefox, CCleaner
does. If you only use IE then the Windows cleaner is fine but no power
user uses IE, end of story.

You're a power idiot. Most of the readers here are new to this contraption
called a 'computer.' The last thing they need is an uninformed power idiot,
like yourself, taking them down a dangerous path.

Go get'em, power idiot!

I have found in the past that anyone who calls himself a "power user" is
usually a "know it all goose".

Or maybe they are just knowledgable enough (in many ways) to recognize
that they have knowledge in an area, but are not a subject matter
expert.

Then, of course, we have people like you who apparently know
everything - although oddly you're not able to solve any of the
complex problems in these groups. Still, they feel confident enough to
criticize others who are ore humble.

subject; there's always a faster car; there's always a guy who punches
harder.
