That's true, but failure can occur even with new hard drives. All of the hard
drives I have now are used. I'm the one who has used them. ;-)

Good point. ALL hard drives with data on them are used hard drives.

I have been using hard drives for the past 10 years, some of them scraped
together from battered PC's, and I've never had an HD failure yet. About
the only problem I've ever had with hardware was a cheapie CPU fan dying on
a cheapie Cyrix 266 mhz system I bought in the late 90's.

When you stop to think about it, it's not amazing when we have weird
problems - what's amazing is that these damn things work as well as they do.

My sister has a 4 year old AMD K6-2 333mhz system I gave her 2 years ago.
Her 7 and 9 year old sons play CD-ROM games on it and don't treat it too
nicely and my sister downloads a ton of junk software from the net on it.
Every 6 months or so I go over, open it up and blow out the dust and dirt,
and format the HD and reinstall Windows. Still purrs. Surprises the hell
out of me.
