Changed Mind - Bought Canon 4200 for Wife

Speaking of what is available... I noticed recently that my local
Costco store now has ink refill kits for sale, so next time I go I
will write down the brand and post it here to see if anyone has a
comment (as if a newsgroup would EVER be without comments!)

That would be IMS ink from costco. They have a website.
http://www.ims-ink.com/index.cfm/fuseaction/home.main/home.cfm

IMHO the only thing cool about the kit are the bottles. The ink, as
with most universal kits, is only soso. While the price is dirt cheap,
we're talking sub $1.00 an ounce...it only works so so in canons or at
least the old canon bci-21 tanks I had available. There are plenty of
mail order houses to choose from that offer ink at there and abouts of
double the price.... but this ink is at least formulated to work with
your printer, and at least color matched. If not that one might look
into "island inkjets" a place which to be honest is one that i know
little about... they are a chain of filling stations. This is assuming
you are in america... UK users might consider Cartridge World, an
equilivent style of business. I know nothing about either only that
they exist and are an alternative to mailordering.

A few months ago I ruined three BC-02 cartridges with the
'universal' refill kit from Costco. They had been working fine until I
refilled them with that particular brand. The refill kit, though, has
been working fine in an older Epson SC-600.

The Canon ip4000 and the ip5000 series are excellent printers, the
are economical to run, my ip5000 hasn't clogged once in 5/6 month
the time I have had it nor ever wanted a print head manual clean

Compared to the 'cloggers' I had it's a dream not having to check eac
print for flaws, advice may have already been given if using non OE
ink to use a formulated ink makes sense to me

Universal ink, well don't forget Epson just squirts ink hence 'inkjet
but Canon has to boil the ink to burst the bubble hence 'bubble jet'
there just has to be a difference in the contents, just something t
consider

Speaking of what is available... I noticed recently that my local
John - Absolutely do not use any refill ink or kit that claims to be
universal for several brands/models of printers. That is probably the IMS
kit about which I've read mixed reviews, most negative. If you want to
refill, there are three vendors that have been mentioned positively on this
NG and on the Nifty-Stuff Forum - MIS, Formulabs, and Hobbicolors. I
haven't seen any aftermarket carts yet, either prefilled or empty, to work
in the ip4200. This generation of Canon printers now has a chip on the cart
that is ostensibly for monitoring remaining ink in the cart. After looking
at the new cart I would expect that the bci-6 and bci-3 carts can't be
inserted into the print head.

Went there yesterday, the Costco kit being sold IS the Ims brand, so I
will stay away from those

I Googled and found MIS site http://www.inksupply.com/cankits.cfm
but they currently don't list anything for the Pixma 4200 so I'll
check back when wife's ink tanks are closer to being empty (and I
did buy an extra set of Canon ink to have on the shelf... but it
MAY be that taking a Canon tank out and putting it back, with the
chip in the cartridge, may not work... time will tell on that)

I've also looked at http://www.nifty-stuff.com/forum/index.php
to try and find web sites for Formulabs and Hobbicolors but do
not find them, so may just use the MIS site

John - Bulk Formulabs ink is available from Alotofthings on their web site
and also on their ebay store site.

Hobbicolors has a web site but sells through their ebay store.

Thanks... I've looked at all the sites and, so far, none of them
have anything for the new "chipped" Pixma 4200 cartridges... so I
will just wait awhile and check again when original tanks look to
be getting low

I will also watch this forum to see what other 4200 owners say
about their experiences with refilling those chipped cartridges

Since chipping seems to be new for Canon, my 1st question will
be what happens when you remove a cartridge and put it back in
the printer... does the chip have "memory" that will ignore the
new ink and say it is empty, or will remove/replace reset any
print counter so the new ink will be used?

I'm also going to call Canon soon to see if they will sell me
the CD tray mentioned in another thread... that seems to be a
"hit or miss" process, depending on who answers the phone at
Canon sales, with some people reporting they are told it may
not be ordered in the US, while other people say they place an
order and receive the parts

The chip on board has a memory, and according to others, those who
print beyond what it's memory thinks is empty you get three warning....
on which it gives you an option to continue without metering. Near as
i'm aware also the printer will not operate without chips.

Yes... keep in mind that some of those misses are folks who are trying
to order tray type C the offical new tray. They are rather ordering
tray type B, one which works with older and newer pixmas, though i've
not personaly tried it on the newer ones any one with a pixma like
yours would be using tray type B. Tray type A won't work unless you
paint new alignment marks on it.

I think I seen some CL100 compatible ink somewhere.

Also, of note, BCI7 ink is the same CL100 ink as CLI8, but unchipped.

#1.. You have no experence with the new ink. According to you you
tested the ip6600D in a lab with epson ink which resulted in a clog.
So you are not qualified to judge the new ink for you have not seen it.

#2. The cartridge is pretty much the same as it was before with the
exception of a new chip located on the locking lever. Other than that,
and the clipping mechnism that permits the shipping of chipless and
chipped tanks changed on the fly for each respective market... i.e.
Japan or the rest of the world. There is nothing really inovative or
*great* about the new design as it's very much the old design. At
least with Epson you actually get a design other than a sponge in a
tank thoughfuly crafted to provide even flow throughout the tank's
life. That could at the very least be called a design... and even a
new design. Canon's design has remained unchanged for years and I
would thank you to actually know something you are writing about.
