The

I
know has something on them does not play. A box shows that the disc is
blank,
but I know it is not. Thanks

The drive or media may be dirty, try using a CD cleaning disk, or the
drive's laser may have died..

Or, try the above fix, your call..

The cd/rw drive is a samsung. I have seen on these newsgroups a cd/rw tool
which I used before and it worked. I have tried your tool but that wasn'y
the
one, it didn't work. I have tried a cleaner but it cannot read it. I have
a
message now that there is no disc in the drive, but there is. Any answers.
I
am sorry but I cannot understand the Microsoft pages you sent me. Thanks

Use the above as a reference on Device manager
If you didn't use the Doug Knox fix, say so..?
Check the Upper & Lower filters for the optical drives.. The easiest way
to
check without going into the registry, would be to go to Device Manager,
open
DVD/CD-ROM drives, right click one of your optical drives, select
properties
from the menu, Details tab, you should see "Device Instance Id" and a drop
down arrow (v), click it, move the mouse pointer down the list to
highlight
Device Upper filters and click it, do the same for the Device Lower
filters,
Class Upper & Lower filters as well to see and take note of their
contents..
Also, there should be just 4 MS signed drivers in the Drivers tab, driver
details button, driver files details window, may want to check, your
call..
(MS signed drivers: cdrom.sys, imapi.sys, redbook.sys, storprop.dll) Do
you
see them Yes or No..?
Please list separately any or all driver names you see other than the MS
signed drivers listed above, that you see in the U&L filters..

Hi I cannot remember the name of the tool that worked, it is mentioned on
one
of these newsgroups. I have a copy on one of my cd discs but, of course I
cannot use it.
I tried the Doug Knox fix but it did not work. I am trying the Upper &
Lower
filters now. Will let you know how I get on.
Going back on when it all went wrong is when I deleted Real player. It
must
have been clinging onto my drive readings.
Will write soon
Thank you

Hi!
I went to the device manager and went the cdrw and right clicked, selected
properties, but could not find the Device Instance Id.

RE: CD/RW not reading discs
Yes I can only see MS signed drivers: cdrom.sys, imapi.sys, redbook.sys,
storprop.dll
And no others.

Ok, the filters should be clear..
Ok, the filters should be clear..
Again, what program did you use to write the data to the disks...???
Was it the inbuilt XP CD burner or a third party software like Nero or
Roxio..?
What is the OEM make & model number of your computer, Dell 2400, HP
Pavilion
950, etc..? What is yours..?
Also, what was the media type CD-R, CD-RW that you were writing to..?
Is the inbuilt CD burner turned on..?
In my computer window, right click your optical drive, select properties,
click the recording tab, check the box "enable CD recording on this drive"
may need to reboot, any change..?
Post your results..

Thanks for replying and sorry to be a pain.
Thanks for replying and sorry to be a pain.
CD burner was inbuilt and is a Samsung CDR/RW SM-3488
Computer make is emachines
Model 210
I have a XP Home Edition
Using CDRW discs
The recording tab was the first thing that was checked and is on.
other information is, that the light inside the CDRW drive is on when I
have
inserted the disc, but goes out after a few minutes.
Hope this helps you?
Thanks for your time.

Ok, using CD-RW (UDF) media is not the best media to use in XP without a

Ok, using CD-RW (UDF) media is not the best media to use in XP without a

reader software like Nero's InCd, Sonic DLA, etc, compared to CD-R media,
see
links below for reference..
http://aumha.org/win5/a/xpcd.php
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/321640/
Also, make sure the IMAPI burning service is set to automatic in your
services window.. Type services.msc in the Run box and scroll down to see
if
it is started and set to automatic, is it..? Right click on the service,
properties, general tab, startup type, (v) click the drop down arrow,
select
automatic, apply, ok, and your done..
If you need to you can reverse the above procedure to turn off the XP
inbuilt CD burner for use with third party software too, if needed or for
testing purposes..

http://www.thefreecountry.com/utilities/datarecovery.shtml
Check out the ISOBuster app and the free CDburnerXP Pro too, may help you
to
see your data..
Have you tried using the CD-RW media containing your data in another
computer..?
http://www.samsungodd.com/eng/LiveUpdate/LiveUpdate.asp
Not sure if your drive is supported, might check or see if liveupdate
works
for your model..?
As a last resort get a new optical drive that includes Nero or Roxio
burning
software..
Post your results.. No pain no gain..
Cheers..

Hi,I tried the badcopy.
Hi,
I tried the badcopy. The first message was - your cd drive appears not
ready
(e.g. the disc is not inserted or drive door not closed) do you want to
continue to scan the disc? When the disc was in, the door was closed and
on a
full disc of files it did not find one. I went through the 3 processes
too.

To reinstall the MS generic cdrom drivers..
To reinstall the MS generic cdrom drivers.. In my computer, tools, folder
options, view tab, in advanced settings, you'll need to first mark "show
hidden files and folders", then uncheck the box for "Hide extensions of
known file types".. Now you can go to the windows\INF folder and find
"cdrom.inf" and right click it, select install from the menu.. Remember to
change back to your original settings in folder options..
Also, you might have an autoplay problem..?
Look these links over, your call..

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...B6-E8FA-45C4-A171-1B389CFACDAD&displaylang=en
The drive may just need to be replaced, if you can't get it to work..
Post your results..

Re: CD/RW not reading discs
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/powertoys/xppowertoys.mspx
Try The Windows XP TweakUI powertoy to disable the autoplay feature on the
CD/DVD drives, may be part of the problem..
Tried it myself and Nero InCD now sees my DVD/CD-RW media as Pink instead
of
solid blue, DVD/CD-R is seen as RAW or blue as I would expect since
disabling the inbuilt, your results may vary..
Hope it can help

No luck with that either. I am sure a few years ago I had the same problem
and it was to do with the filters. But that tool which I used & cannot
remember the name, fixed it.

there or your drive is defective, get a new one and see if that helps..
Wish I could see what was really going on with the hardware or if you may
just be confused a little, it happens to us all at times..
Not sure what to do now as I am unsure of what you have tried or haven't,
though I thought you cleared the filters days ago..
