I uninstalled CCleaner 2.0 because it was deleting my Run history, even
though that option was unchecked. Has that glitch been fixed with the
latest release?

Here is the only setting that i always had checked in advanced - old
prefetch data
untill today after reading how the prefetch files really work :

wait a sec in the last one you could take the check off for the yahoo tool
bar, you are telling me this version you cannot?
robin

I took Yahoo TB off by unchecking it Robin, and it's not around here. I
just installed the new release last week from the "alternative" download
site.

For some reason i don't remember seeing anything about a Yahoo Tool Bar
this time. And also i uncheck all the boxes. Robin here's a fix - Delete
CCleaner and then use CCleaner to clean up the registry after itself. He-He.

Not in the "slim" build, Robin.

Randy
(soon to be an ex-MVP) - back soon but otherwise you will be supported.

There has been a rush to condemn CCleaner about the "old prefetch files"
cleaning some two years ago or so. While some of these blogs were quite
right to point out that not all cleaning is always good, and that *.*
deleting of the prefetch folder is quite idiotic, they all quite failed
to see that Windows' own prefetch cleaning is more moronic than the
CCleaner way.

When the prefetch folder reaches 256 entries, Windows just goes and
deletes 50% of these entries. I have never found any information
anywhere which 128 entries get deleted - that seems to be a secret.

CCleaner (if the box is checked) cleans out all entries that haven't
been used for the last 14 days. I personally think that 30 days would
be more reasonable, but 14 days it is for now.

It is up to everyone's situation to decide if you want to activate
CCleaner's prefetch folder cleaning. If you use your computer intensely
and with a large number of applications, then prefetch cleaning may be
useful. If you use your computer sparingly with few applications (so
that your prefetch folder will never reach 256 entries), then prefetch
cleaning is better disabled.

I do prefetch cleaning, and my computer runs just great!

Pat, I too like how my computer runs after cleaning my prefetch files every
month or so But now cleaning every day with CCleaner i have to be removing
files that my computer needs to load programs in return making my start up
times slower. Well thats how i see it for now, untill i learn more.

And when you said you never found out which files are cleaned, It's got to be
like system restore - cleaning the oldest ?

you got me thinking so I installed it first on the test computer and it had
the option like the other versions to uncheck the toolbar option, which I
did as I did in prior versions
robin

Ron,

That's exactly my point - the question mark after "cleaning the oldest".

Both methods of cleaning - Windows and CCleaner - have some
disadvantages. If CCleaner would allow to change the 14-day period, then
CCleaner would be perfect. I will take it up in the CC Forum.

You've got me there, Robin, as there are no options in the "non-slim" builds that I
can see that offer this option.
Where are you downloading the program from, FileHippo?

Pat, you can delete you prefetch files from a Run Box or command, if you will.
Do the following, hit your Windows key - that brings up the Run Box, enter "prefetch"
(no quotes) - then select Control Plus "A" on your keyboard, this will flush the prefetch
files and folder - the hit Alt F4 to close - you're done.

Randy

yep downloading it from filehippo

i do it manually- by going into c:/windows/prefech and delete them from
their- the only thing i do not delete is the layout.ini in that folder

I do this on an average of once every 3mths

robin

The point of this branch of the discussion is that prefetch files should
*not* be deleted; unnecessary deletions of prefetch files will slow down
performance. So if you delete *.*, then you are worst off.

I think that the Windows prefetch cleaning method (delete 50%) is the
second worst.

The best worst (in my opinion) is the CCleaner method.
