On my system the ATI player freezes trying to play back *anything*.
Everything else seems to work ok, and Microsoft Media Player plays things
just fine.

This seems to be the right thread to post this question (I hope)

I haven't upgraded the drivers for my Radeon 8500 for some time (I wish I had noted the number on the old before upgrading, but unfortunately didn't). However, decided to do it tonight. Did an UT2003 benchmark before and got 128,9 flyby and 54 botmatch. Installed the 3.6 and ran the same test. Got 97 and 52 (all in 1024x768) I had DirectX9.0a installed before and after. Has anyone else encountered a degrading in performance (especially in UT2003) by installing this driver ?

Any feedback is highly appreciated

Thanks

I'm not able to help you on this unfortunately, not a gamer (UT2003 is
Unreal Tournament I presume?)...

Is it possible that something got turned off or backed off setting-wise
during the uninstall/install? Might want to check with the guys at:
http://www.rage3d.com and post in one of the forums there (or search).

This doesn't sound like a usual Catalyst thing (degraded gaming
performance from one Cat to the next)...

Thanks Larry,

I'll try rage3d

Take care

3.6 has made improvements in basic TV/DVD functions / Vs resources,
for me.....BUT DAMN IT I wish ATI would stop printing what appears to be
the proper order in which to install these,(e.g. 1.2.3.) but not so!, once
again its seems to be wdm driver,no boot, drivers, reboot, control panel
(if you want). why do I constantly get a 'no wdm inf file installed' even
though everything seems to function perfectly. Is this not the proper order
of installation? When I install just the drivers, then reboot, I get
'unknown hardware' and no install, this results in a unknown hardware entry
in device manager after cancelling(or was I to search automatically, this
doesn't seem to be the proper sequence of events however).

WHAT, (and this is a MMC/rmote thing)...... is the 'fullscreen" button on
the remote?!! Once easylook opens the TV i have to close(esc key) to get to
the Desktop.

Don't know about the rules of the list, but I sure appreciate the help here!

There's a couple of ways to do this.

One would be to launch regedit, and then navigate through the registry to:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE -> SOFTWARE -> ATI Technologies (this is the one that needs to be modified; there should another listing called ATI Technologies Inc. which is the drivers I believe that you don't need to touch).

From ATI Technologies, open the Desktop listing.

Whenever I uninstall the ATI Control Panel, it seems that the two keys called Icon.reg and IconTA.reg disappear from the Desktop listing. These two keys are what control the ATI Programs *folder* when you right click the ATI Control panel system tray icon.

The first method would be to manually input these two registry keys by hand (this is a little tedious which requires you print out the attached Icon.reg and IconTA.reg files to know what to input). The other way would be easier:

I have exported these two keys to a backup folder so whenever I run into this problem, I only need to doubleclick first the Icon.reg file to append it to my registry, then do the same for the IconTA.reg key, and then reboot my machine. After reboot, the ATI Programs listing is restored to the ATI Control Panel system tray icon.

Not sure if this is against the rules of posting to this newsgroup or not (if it is, sorry!) but I've attached the two keys that I use to restore this problem on my machine to this post. Just make sure you have a backup of your registry before you begin modifying it (in case you need to revert back for some reason). You then simply doubleclick on the Icon.reg file, click OK, and then click OK again, and repeat with the IconTA.reg file, reboot your machine.

Yes, I for one would like the registry information for getting the system

Jack,

Sorry for the confusion. In the system tray (lower right-hand corner of the
screen), do you have a red/white ATI icon? If the ATI Control panel is
installed correctly, you should. Mine shows up next to the Volume icon and a
Norton AV icon.

If you right click this red/white ATI Control panel icon (system tray icon),
you should see options displayed in a popup menu.

I went ahead and installed the latest bundle and EXACTLY to my suspicion,
the install of everything works as you indicated but upon reboot, there is
NO longer a listing of ATI Programs in the popup menu if you right click on
the red/white ATI Control panel icon displayed in the system tray!!!

ATI is always half ass about things. I even tried re-installing the ATI
Control panel, no dice; ATI Programs is broken in this menu (this problem
has been around for a while).

I guess I shouldn't complain because the drivers are stable, and the
installation was a breeze; no uninstalling!!

The fix action to add the ATI Programs to the ATI Control icon is easy using
a registry editor. If you're interested, I can post the instructions...I
love this feature because this is where I usually launch the TV player or
the Library...

Larry...I don't quite understand your directions...I have the ATI Control
Panel installed but I sure can't right click on it or find the ATI
Programs...

Under the Start Menu if I click on Programs and go to the ATI Multimedia
Center listing I have ATI Remote Wonder, CD Audio, Configuration, DVD, File
Player, Launch Pad, TV and Video CD. On Launch Pad I have Player, VCD, CD,
DVD, TV and Library.

My Control Panel shows Catalyst 3.6 and all the new drivers as does dxdiag.

Again, I did not uninstall anything...just clicked on the Bundled download
and rebooted when all was finished. Every thing appears fine and working
well.

Jack
Jack,

If you have the ATI Control Panel installed, could you check something for
me on your setup (since you just did what I want to try).

Right click on the ATI Control Panel, select ATI Programs and tell me what's
listed on your setup.

I have: DVD, LaunchPad, File Player, Library, TV, Remote, Video CD, and CD
Audio

I use to have problems with some of these apps getting messed up in this
particular listing (requiring a registry edit to fix) whenever I uninstalled
the ATI Control Panel. This system is rock solid, everything works like a
champ, and I don't want to feck anything up (but I do have a disk clone so
I'm real tempted to give this all-in-one driver bundle a shot)...

Thanks a lot!

I downloaded the bundled package of 16 mb's. Clicked on the file, it did
the entire install asking for a single reboot at the end of the install. No
uninstall of Display and no individual installs. Works fine with all the
latest drivers and 3.6 Catalyst listed in Control Panel.

Larry, I don't know if posting a small but helpful attachment might be
against the group rules either, but posting in HTML is contrary to most
Usenet groups' rulings, and you won't endear yourself on Usenet by using it.
Look at the size of your post: 28K - even the two attachments were only 8K
together!

Might help if you posted in plain text (Format > Plain Text in OE). Thanks!

Hehe - just tuen it off! Its a nice idea, but badly implemented. If the
buttons kept their same functionality as normal but had the popups for
volume and pause for example then that'd be good, but changing what the
buttons can do, and not letting you get out of EasyLook again with your
remote, is just silly! At least that was just their first attempt at it, we
can only hope for better!

Never listen to the hype...been Using ME for years..with absolutely no
problems....what would you have me do? downgrade to 2000? or jack my systems
with XP? Besides this is only one of 4 machines running one form or another
of ATI cards, ALL running ME, and they aren't experiencing any
problems.....course they are running the earlier versions of the drivers, I
won't update all, until one will work.correctly.

Hmmm - from my experience ME was the least reliable and slowest Microsoft
operating system i've ever seen or had to use, and thats on several
different computers, both mine and of friends. If I needed an older version
of Windows, i'd go back to 98SE, otherwise stick to XP or 2000. And with
the latest couple of versions of the ATI drivers theres no problems - but if
ATI's drivers weren't very good in the past that doesn't make Windows bad -
that makes ATI bad!
