not sure if i'm in the right place but here goes, i want to network my laptop and my pc, a friend has told me why don't you get a 'cat5 cable'.

not sure how it works, is it: a cable to link my laptop and pc there are two connectors on my laptop and pc, there is one that is a standard modem cable socket and a slightly larger one next to it (being thisone i presume) does the cable simply plug in one to other and then configure the laptop and my pc......

the connector looks similar to the plug on the end of your phone cord, you'll want a Cat5 crossover cable, its important that you get a crossover cable and not a patch cable

once you have the cable you will need to configure both systems and plug one end into each of them

I have the same problem. I've ordered a cat5 crossover cable - the plugs are RJ 45. You can use Microsoft network software to configure. I am a beginner and haven't yet done it but there is plenty of support on the forum.

i have problems networking my laptop to other computers/laptops. Im using xp home and my flatmate has xp pro. If i plug an rg45 crossover cable, should windows automatically recognise it or is there some nerdy configuring needing done?! :-) Want to play AEO II and also back some stuff up using his cd writer.

Cheers big ears.

You will need to set up a Small office or home network.

Enter 'My network places' and start the 'setup a home or small office network' option.

You need to do this on both computers.

To share files from each computer you will need to enter the properties of each drive you want to access and enable sharing for those drives

I have done what TriplexDread suggested and it worked fine. I have not tried anything out yet.
Good Luck

LAN is conected at 100Mbps but I cannot connect to the Internet on the second computer. I have tried Direct Connection with no result - Help please!

So all you have done is connected each computer directly to each other via the ethernet ports?

This if you plan to go on net it can prove a little awkward doing this. Ideally you should be goin thru a router first.

ie

Computer 1
Net-----------Router
Computer 2

(Page wont allow me to separate comp 1 and 2 on differnt lines ahead of Router name)

Basically a Router is needed between the internet connection and both computers. This way both machines can stay networked and share an internet connection for gaming or browsing

The second pc has seen both printers and I have shared all drives (I think). I thought the crossover cable would be ok for sharing the Broadband connection.
Thanks for replying

No, you really need to do the job properly ... crossover cables are fine for the odd file transfer and accessing the other PC.

A Router is designed to do the same job and allow access to the Internet AND protect the PCs from being hacked. ;)

You need the right tools to do the right job.

What Internet access do you have ... is it like NTL (real cable ;) ) or BT type ADSL (imitation cable) :D
Each need slightly different setups.

Crossover is fine for computer to computer transfers. But for internet connections and file sharing a router is best.

However there are two differnt kinds of router depending on what kind of connection to the internet you have as Mucks says above ;)

My internet connection is Tiscali ADSL. What do you recommend?

Tell me what is written on it ... ;)

Example:
BT Viagra 205

:)

oh gawed, why do these so called ISPs use USB modems ... they really are sad.

Well, you is gonna have to replace it by buying a new ADSL Router Modem ... but you could start with asking Testies, err, I mean Tiscali if they will replace it, free of charge, with an "Ethernet ADSL Router Modem" (a 4 port one would be nice) ... don't tell you want to connect 20 PC to their line though, will you. ;)

Are they open 24/7 for enquiries? Free phone number?

:D

Dear Muckshifter
I have seen modem/routers in Maplin and !!!ebay!!!-will look into it - very interesting.
Thanks

I would pick Maplin's over eBay ... they do a cheap Trust for £20-30 ... I wouldn't pay anymore than that though.

;)
