I've been trying to get into a Web address on my computer at home, have
managed on my works computer but always get "page cannot be displayed" at
home. I have gone through what it suggests but still no joy
-- Any suggestions please?

Hi Morningbard :-)

Please provide us with the version of Windows you are using and the link to
the site you are trying to access.

Check C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\etc for a file named HOSTS with no
extension. (Not Hosts.sam)
Make sure Windows is set to show hidden files and folders and is NOT set to
hide extensions for known file types.
If HOSTS exists, rename it to HOSTS.OLD
Reboot an try again.

Or, In a Cmd window, enter
ipconfig /flushdns
then clear your TIF also, and re-boot.

Hi yes I retarted twice just to make sure if it helps I am on broadband with
a router for my home network

To get a Cmd window go to Start | Run and type cmd and in that window type
ipconfig /flushdns
and press <Enter>

If it's just one address I'm out of ideas, but reinstalling IE won't help.

What does nslookup show you for that site name?

E.g. open, or switch to, a cmd window and enter

nslookup

That puts the command line into nslookup interactive mode.
Then enter the following two lines. The prompt character will
be automatically supplied:

Server: <your primary DNS server's name>
Address: <your primary DNS server's IP address>

Non-authoritative answer:
www.1sexyangel.co.uk internet address = 207.218.248.68

1sexyangel.co.uk nameserver = ns11.pcs-net.com
1sexyangel.co.uk nameserver = ns12.pcs-net.com
ns11.pcs-net.com internet address = 207.218.248.239
ns12.pcs-net.com internet address = 207.218.248.240</example>

If your DNS can't find this name use one of the nameserver names
or addresses listed above and see if that clues in your DNS server.

server ns11.pcs-net.com
Default Server: ns11.pcs-net.com
Address: 207.218.248.239
Server: ns11.pcs-net.com
Address: 207.218.248.239

Name: www.1sexyangel.co.uk
Address: 207.218.248.68
</example>

Then enter

exit

to leave the subcommand mode
and try a ping -n 1 command. It doesn't matter if it times out;
you are only doing it to see if the lookup it does might finally work.

If the lookup works, quickly go and try IE again.

If the lookup doesn't work you now have proof that the problem
is with your ISP's DNS. Notify them of this problem. They will
probably tell you to wait for the server to discover the name.
They should also tell you that you can add a temporary override
via HOSTS while the DNS is being updated. E.g. from the
information above add a line which looks like this:

207.218.248.68 www.1sexyangel.co.uk

Good luck

hi, sorry to interrupt in this thread
I have a similar problem too. I've tried the first method you mentioned but
up to ...\Drives , then nothing more to come and I can't find the file named
HOSTS

for the second method, I can open the cmd window and entered
ipconfig/flushdns, but I don't know what is "then clear your TIF also", what
should I type to clear the TIF?

My problem-accessed web page is imageshack.us and I used windows98.

Thanks for your attention!

my version is windows98
is it right to clear the TIF by clicking the internet options from tools and
clear them?
or clear them in the command window(in ms-dos mode)?
do I need to quit and close the command window before clearing the TIF?

please detail the procedures because I'm really weak in computering

thanks

Hi Robert .

I have tried your suggestion and comes back as unknown domain 4 packets sent
and 4 lost on the ping. Will get in touch wiht my ISP. Thank you for your
help and eveyone else who have offered advice have learnt a bit more on the
steep techy curve.
thanks again

that's too bad, I still can't solve the problem yet

1)I've tried the [cmd] method and clear the TIF

relating to a thread dated back on 10/29/2004 7:31 PM PST:
2)I've tried the [extract dll file in start/run window]method
3)also tried the (2nd)[SFC] method and rebooted(though the source is from
c:\window\helpdesk\sfc instead of from d:\window98)

all are tried but imageshack.us is still can't be view/accessed

also, I can't find the HOSTS file without .sam extension, but just one with
..sam extension and a shortcut with extension.lnk

also, when I use Mozilla to browse, it says the site imageshack.us not
available, and the page where I got this link just shows the links to
imageshack.us as if it doesn't exist.

just wonder:is something I've missed in my computer? or what else ? is there
any other methods available?

I'm sure that the site imageshack.us can be view by others and I've viewed
it before but not this time

thanks again!

1)I've tried the [cmd] method and clear the TIF

cmd.exe is only available on NTx OS.
The analogous application on your OS would be command.com
However, of the command line tools I described to the OP
you will have only ping.

That suggests then that as with the OP your problem is with your DNS.
You should notify your ISP too or wait for its DNS tables to be updated
for this lookup.

In the meantime you could add an entry to your HOSTS file
(e.g. copy HOSTS.SAM to HOSTS and add an entry using
*one* of these addreses from my nslookup)

thank you for the advice.

I've notified my ISP about it described as DNS problem, though not knowing
when will they reply and I've also created a hosts file(because I don't have
one in my computer) and followed your advice and added the first address
provided.

hope that the problem can be solved and be soon.

thanks again for your advice
