Hello all,

I got this problem. When trying to print on a CD usinig the tray, it
goes in and comes out after 3 sec. I get a message to try again, I do
but it's still the same. I used to have this problem but after a
couple of tries I somehow managed to print the CD. Now, no matter how
many times I try, it doesn't work. I try many initial positions of the
tray- still no result. Has anybody got the same problem?

1) Make sure that you do not insert the tray till it is asked for.
2) Make sure that the tray is selected in the "page size" drop-down on the
"page setup" pane. It'll be showing as "CD-R tray F" or something similar.

I've upgraded my iP4000 with a CD/DVD tray off eBay (the feature was
originally removed for North Americans... are we not people!). Mine
works flawlessly, no rejection. I can only suggest you make sure the
shiny small "metallic" reflectors are clean. The printer needs to read
them cleanly in order to use the tray properly.

Yep, it was the reflectors. They seemed clean to me but when i gave
them a good once over, it started printing. Piece of junk.

Thanks!

Have you tried using a different CD brand? I don't have that
particular problem with discs being ejected, but I do one type of
backup to DVD-RAM, and when I use one brand (Memorex), after the
drawer is closed, flashing LEDs indicate disc activity. If it
flashes for only several seconds, the computer won't recognize that
the disc is in the drive. I usually have to eject and repeat this 2
to 5 times before that LEDs flash for maybe 30 seconds, at which
point the computer sees the disc and I can do the backup. When I
use Maxell DVD-RAM discs, this problem never occurs. Even with the
Memorex discs, once they're recognized I've never had any disc
errors either reading or writing. FWIW, this was with a Lightscribe
drive supplied by HP with their m7470n computer.

All peachy but I was talking about ink prints done on a printer not in
the cd/dvd drive.

That's good to hear; it never hurts to take a wild stab at a wild
suggestion!

Well, mine seems "clean" looking at it like you did with yours. But
after I post this I'm going to shine it up with window cleaner, 'cos I
can't stand rejection. ;-)

P.S. I always store my tray in a drawer in the original plastic bag it
came in (that's another not-so-wild suggestion!)

No, no. That borderlines with CRAZY! :)

(two thumbs up!)... Happy CD/DVD printing!

Side note: I enabled both my printers (iP4000 & iP5000) for tray
printing. The iP4000 prints perfectly but the iP5000 smudges. I have
removed the printhead and cleaned it thoroughly, even tried the thick
paper setting. All to no avail, it still smudged the printable disc.
But as I said, the iP4000 can do the job perfectly, so it's just a
minor irritant. I'll just have to live with my CD/DVD label printing
challenged Canon iP5000 printer. Fortunately they were wise enough
to design it so paper would pass through unsmuded by the printhead.
What a novel idea!!!

Taliesyn, I always thought you were Canadian and IP 4000's in Canada have
the tray I think. At least thats what I think Zak from this group said (I
drop by here sometimes, but haven't seen Zakeke (sp) here for quite a
while). I live in Canada and as far as I know, North America is US, Canada
and Mexico :). Are you in the US?I wonder why they would remove the tray for
the US market. I have an IP4000 but never used the tray. I like the IP4000.
Its a good printer.

Hail Mary! (sorry, couldn't resist)

Yes, I'm in Canada! Neither the US nor Canadian iP4000s/iP5000s had the
"cookie sheet" CD/DVD tray "B". Something about Canon preferring to not
pay royalty fees to someone - or so I heard.

Some things have changed with current models. The Canadian version of
the iP4300 comes with the tray while US versions don't (I checked
websites).

Your above post is "hazy". You state the iP4000 has the tray (you
think) and then later you say you never use the tray. Which is it?
Do you have the thin plastic "cookie sheet" tray "B" you insert into
the Canon oven - er, printer?

-Taliesyn

Well, I'm glad your problem has been resolved, but when you said :

it was worth considering that there might have been a disc or disc
drive problem. I realize that the printer wasn't trying to read or
write to the disc, so the problem might have been due to different
disc reflecting differently, disc warpage, maybe even its thickness.
I've never seen a printer in operation that prints on discs (other
than Lightscribe drives) so I don't know if the printer's disc trays
(which I assume they have) need to have a person manually insert and
remove discs, or whether they have motorized trays that swallow and
spit out the discs. :)

BTW, I see that the IP4300 is on sale locally for $60 so I'm
tempted to get one, but didn't notice any mention that it could
write to CDs, which is a printer feature I'd like to have. I
haven't been following the messages here very closely, but from
vague memories of past messages, is it that the IP4200 and IP4300
both can print labels on CDs, but not with models sold in the USA?

If you use a proper OEM printer with OEM ink you would not have these
problems.

What was it that Zazeke used to say about it? I didn't completely understand
it, because I didn't have a desire to do my own labels for CD's. Isn't that
what Zak said the tray was for printing labels for CD's? Didn't he say that
the IP 4000 models in Canada had this tray and he sometimes advised US
people to order it from Canon Canada. Zak is gonna come here and "get" me if
I am telling you wrong information about him -LOL. Doesn't he come to this
group any more?

I guess I am a bit "hazy" because I've never used the tray, but I was under
the impression that the tray is already in the Canon IP4000 in Canadian
models and you just need to add an insert? I was under the impression that
US models never had the tray OR the insert. Is that not correct? Maybe you
can straighten me out about this :)

Are you still here Measekite? Why are you still harping on about Canon OEM
ink? Why don't you get a job with Canon. I'm serious. You obviously have an
obsession with Canon OEM ink beyond normal. You must know by now you are
not going to convert people here over to your way of thinking. Why bang your
head against a stone wall? It doesn't work? Have you nothing better to do?

I don't remember what exactly Zac stated as I stopped following the
thread after a while. But I can tell you that the iP4000/iP5000 never
came with the tray in Canada or the US.

The tray is NOT attached to the printer nor stored in the printer. It's
a SEPARATE 5" by 9.5" sheet of thin plastic designed with a hub to hold
(lock) a CD/DVD much like the center piece in CD or DVD cases. You click
the CD/DVD onto the hub and feed the tray into the printer - when
prompted by your printer to do so.

Visit below sample link for photo of a typical tray for the iP4000 if
you're not sure what it looks like:

That's right, both US and Canadians models were not tray enabled, thus
they came with no tray or roller assembly. Both of which can be bought
on eBay. I paid about half of what this eBay ad is asking. Shop around!

So thats what the tray looks like, but the roller part in the picture on
Ebay looks a bit like the front of the IP4000 when you pull the front of the
printer down, then the next part you pull down as if you were going to
change a cartridge has a small curved piece on the front of it much the same
as in the picture on Ebay above. Isn't that part you pull down for anything?

I noticed that no one in this ip4200 thread has mentioned going to:

http://pixma.web1000.com/IP4200/index.html

"Five Easy Steps to enable the Canon USA models to print directly to
CD or DVD"

For other Canon printers, go to:

http://pixma.allhyper.com/index.php/99/2006/10/28/five-easy-steps-
to-cd-printing-with-canon-printers.html

I followed the steps to reprogram the ip4200 and made my own CD/DVD
template last year. After printing over 100 full-face DVD labels,
the printer and homemade CD/DVD tray still work perfectly!

Although the center hub seems more precise, using a CD as a cutting
template for the top layer CD "well" results in a tray that holds
the CD/DVD very precisely. To overcome the lack of the additonal
rollers, you only have to push the tray in an inch or two at the
beginning of the disc printing to overcome the resistance of the
printer to the front edge of the cardboard tray. The mechanism
synchronizes the tray position to the three mirrored squares. After
slight calibration adjustment (Acoustica CD/DVD print program), the
printed label alignment is dead-on accurate.

BTW, I bought a used Epson R300 last month to compare the DVD
printing quality to the ip4200 (the R300 sits fine on top of the
Canon printer!).

The conclusion: although both printers can print excellent disc
labels on printable DVD media, the Canon-printed disc prints dry and
is available for immediate use. The Epson-printed disc has to sit
for a few minutes to dry sufficiently for handling.

I like Epson (I still have my Stylus 500, Photo 700, C68, and C88),
but I have to say, with the Canon I have NEVER had to initiate a
head-cleaning cycle, and the printing quality (paper and disc) has
never been short of excellent.

I bought the ip4200 with a PowerShot A410 camera at Staples for $99.
Although I bought the printer for it's disc-printing capability
(after resetting the firmware), I have found myself using it for
it's reliable standard printing several times when the Epson printer
sitting on top of it has "gone bonkers."

And, of course, the Epsons can't print automatically in duplex mode.

Sorry for digressing!

From what I understand, Canon agreed with (or was coerced by) Epson
for Epson to offer the only printers sold in the United States to
have direct CD/DVD printing capability.

I can see why, based on the quality of the disc printing using the
Canon ip4200.

That is where the CD Tray goes, and all it was intended for, in the
original design.
It is jsut that for US/Canada models, a plain cover has been istalled
instead of a roller cover (that covers the slot, you can see the peice
that seems removable.)

I thought that the US models never had the tray OR the insert as I
said above, but I thought the Canadian models of IP4000 had something
that US models didn't have in the area of CD labels. But now when I

Mary

Yes, t could be that Canon Canada was a little more liberal in offering
those parts than Canon USA
