Thank you sooooooo much! You are awesome!!!

You should need to do that only once. It appears that a recent update damaged
the XML file that controls the appearance of the Navigation Pane. Starting
Outlook with that switch regenerates the file.

Another possible cause it that Outlook didn't terminate correctly the last
time at shutdown. This could also result in a corrupt xml-file (just in case
someone encounters this where it might not be related to any update).

Thanks Brian. I had the same problem develop yesterday. Your knowledge
proves very helpful once again! Robert

I'm glad it worked for you.

i've tried to do this but it says I can't in win32.

I suspect you didn't include the space in front of the switch.
Start>Run>outlook.exe /resetnavpane
See the space?

You just saved me! this was not from my post, I had posted yesterday, and
could not find the thred that the email indicated.

HOwevere, your fix, helped me, and I can now open Outlook! WOW, how did you
know this?

Are you doing it correctly? See
http://www.outlook-tips.net/beginner/switches.htm - At start menu, run, type
the following with a space between outlook and the switch.
outlook.exe /resetnavpane

I know this thread is slightly old but here's my question:

I have a similar problem in that I am seeing the "cannot open Outlook
window" error. Each user that logs onto our domain is seeing this error and
I can fix it permanently for each user by doing the outlook.exe
/resetnavepane fix but each new user still sees the error on first login. We
are using roaming profiles so I'm wondering if there is a configuration
setting in Outlook (using outlook 2007) to allow it to work correctly with
roaming profiles (perhaps it's not looking in the correct place for the XML
file that handles the navigation pane)? Our profile directories are stored
on a network share. any help is appreciated!

THANK YOU, BRIAN!
You got me back running, too.

CLick Start>Run and enter

outlook.exe /resetnavpane

in the Open field. Be sure to include the space. Click OK.
