I cannot connect to any sites other than those with an https:// prefix.
I am able to connect to any site just fine using FireFox, and
Microsoft AntiSpyware, and other spyware detection software is able to
download updates without any problems.
I am working with a new laptop, and as far as I can tell, it has always
had this problem. When I got the laptop, it had XP Home on it, and I
have upgraded it to XP Pro. I have checked the laptop for spyware using
Microsoft AntiSpyware, Spybot and Ad-Aware, and haven't found anything.
I have attempted to repair the installation three or four times, but
this did not fix the problem.
I thought that IE wasn't working at all, but I found a message in this
group where the person said that they were not able to connect to
http:// sites but where able to connect to https:// sites. I gave it a
try and, low and behold, https://mail.yahoo.com came right up.
Unfortunately, the thread ended there and didn't have a solution.
I have found numerous suggestions that involve regsvr32, sfc, msconfig,
but none of these have worked. I have set all of my Internet Options
back to the defaults, and I have set my security setting to the lowest
levels, but this didn't help. I am behind a corporate firewall, so I
have turned off the firewall that comes with XP.
I really do not want to have to re-format and re-install because it took
me a week to do so last time. However, I am at my wit's end. I was
almost ready to re-format and re-install when I found the message about
https://. I hope that someone will be able to help me fix this problem.
Thank you,
Don
