Has anyone here tried CA's ezAntivirus? How does it compare with Norton? I
see it can be bought for $12 and they only charge $12/yr for the update
subscription. I've used Norton for a long time, but they really seem to be
getting out of hand on the annual charges.

Thanks....

I've used it since the days when it was free. It is modestly priced and after
the first year the annual subscription is $9.95US ... it works very well, is
updated in a very timely basis (virus sigs I mean) and has never been a hog. It
is a shadow of the footprint of Norton/Symantec etc. and is considerably simpler
to use. I recommend it without any reservation.

I am beta testing the newest version (6.2) that also contains inbound email
scanning support (something that was lacking as far as some people were
concerned).

You can still get a free one year license for eTrust EZ Armor. In addition
to EZ Antivirus, it contains an earlier version of ZoneAlarm than that
currently available directly from Zonelabs. Just install the AV program and
use the latest version of ZoneAlarm if that's the software firewall you use.
I would agree with Kerry Lile's comments regarding the comparison to Norton.
Here's the link to the free offer:

Do I correctly read into your comment that just the AntiVirus part of the
Armor package can be installed? You don't have to install the firewall or
anything else? I have a hardware firewall so I don't really need a software
version on top of it.

Thanks for the link to the free trial version.

If I understand correctly, you're saying the current production version won't
check my incoming e-mail? That's where all my viruses seem to come from so
it would be a critical requirement for me.

If this is true, then do you have any insight into when the 6.2 version goes
into production?

Thanks....

Not quite... the current version does NOT examine your incoming email directly -
that is 'as it comes from the email server'. If you attempt to do anything at
all with any attachment (save as; save; open etc) then of course, the AV
software jumps all over it. Beginning with 6.2 (which is in beta) EZ-AV will
(if you let it) examine email as it arrives and will remove infected attachments
and replace the attachment with a text file describing why the attachment was
removed (including the details of the virus that it contained). As far as I
know, it does NOT look at outgoing email (redundant anyway IMHO not to mention a
false sense of security for the recipients).

I have lots of email viruses every day - every now and then I'll do a "Save as"
just to watch EZ-AV leap on it.

It is an EXCELLENT product in my opinion and their dilligence at supplying
updated signatures is very very good.

When I tried the free install it installed both but I seem to recall it asking
if I wanted both pieces... not sure). In any case, I was later able to uninstall
the firewall part (which I did as soon as I realized it was a version of
ZoneAlarm - which I do not like at all).

I used it on our 3 machines, but CA could never get straight which license
went with which machine and which machine should receive an email
notification when a new signature file was installed. And after you get
passed the license number, you have to know your customer ID. And these
things change whenever you renew.

I like the fact that CA "pushes" updates at me rather than my having to go
to their site and "pull" the updates. Cost: It was free when it started.
Then $4.95 per year, last year the updates were $9.95 and you say they are
up to $12 now. I have no reason to believe that EZ is more- or less-
effective than Norton, McAfee or any of the others.

I couldn't agree more, Kerry. I too have used it since the free days of
InoculateIT PE. I used Norton prior to that and got 3 viruses with a
defective one.

Plus.....I do NOT want an antivirus that scans my downloading mail. I don't
need that. Mailwasher shows me what is spam, viruses or legit emails, and I
delete what I want from there. I received some 5 or so Netsky (I assume)
viruses this morning.......Mailwasher Pro flagged them as possible viruses.

All attachment emails on my computer go into a separate folder.....should I
choose to use OE to download my mail without vetting it first via MW.....so
easy to check and delete them there.

This beta 6.2 sounds interesting.

Cheers....Heather

Yes, you can install the AV program without the firewall. You can deselect
the firewall during installation.

I've been using Avast Home edition for the past few months. It scans email
for a variety of email clients not just OE and will identify an email
containing an infected attachment as it arrives in your inbox. I keep
eTrust on my system as a second AV program. Here's the Avast link:

AFAIK CA don't "push" updates to you. The software is scheduled to check for
updates and downloads/installs them when they're available. Much like most
other antivirus packages

ezAntivirus is good because as others have said, it is bloat free, and
actually pretty fast. I use NOD32 but have in the past used CA (in the days
when it was called InoculateIT Personal Edition)

Yes for 2 years tried both , finally dropped Norton 6 months ago
Great auto updates, upto few a day sometimes, no weird messages a la
Norton's just gets
read of all virii with practically no interaction on my part.
Just a personal opinion :-) .

Why is it CA's job to determine which computers correspond with which
licenses?

As far as notification emails... if you've purchased these licenses under
the same email address then you'll only get notifications to one address.

Hey, Figgs!

Just got back from hols to find my Windows Security Update cd had arrived.
Don't know if this is widely known yet, but it comes with a 2nd cd - the 1
year EZArmor trial.

Hi Shane......

Still on backorder here in Canada.......I want to know why England gets it
before the US and here......grin. Not in todays mail either. And the
version of ZA on the 2nd disk is a 3.xxx one......not compatible with WinME
and SR.

Cheers, Heather

At a guess, the cds are sent to the various countries - or made locally - so
they're all available at the same time. And I'm one of the half-dozen people
in the UK who wanted one. There's probably a round dozen want one in Canada.

btw the latest free ZA doesn't interfere with SR afaics. I installed it on
my pater's machine and he complained only yesterday that SR won't let him go
back to last month! <sigh>

I put ZA on there in preference to Sygate or Kerio for the greater
simplicity. Not that it really matters as afaics he does what the rest of my
family do - when asked if such and such should be allowed to access the net
he automatically does the 'yes and don't ask me again' thing - judging by
the viruses/trojans I found with permission to do so. <sigh again>

Hi Puss.....

I put ZAPro v.4.5.530 (not the latest 'beta' release) on here a few days ago
and no problems with the computer......better check the SR points which I
forgot about. But Heirloom and Jack M. both say that they have no problems.
(SR points are fine.....had a couple since then)

Want me to pop in on Dad and read him the riot act when I am over there?
(G)

As to the MS CD.......thanks to Mike Maltby's explanation, I will not be
using it, period. Perhaps if I updated to XP, I would. But not on this
WinME baby of mine.......it really screws stuff up, doesn't it.

If anyone wants Mike's thorough explanation of this CD (not the antivirus +
firewall one).....let me know and I will copy it over.

Cheers....Figgs

Latest regular release version is 4.5.538.001 (2/19/2004)

:)

Grin.......I refer to every 'latest regular release' as a *beta* version coz
I think they test them on the general public!!

I have been assured by a couple of the MVP's that the above version works
just fine on WinME tho. So will upgrade thru the program probably. The
Version 3.xxx ones mucked up auto restore points, which is why I stayed with
2.6.362 for so long.

Cheers...Heather
