I wanted to let the group know that we are pushing out build 613 to the beta
testers over the next few hours. You will start to see a notification
stating a new build is available starting today. I wrote a quick blurb in my
blog if you want more information.

It may seem picayune, but the "Donwloading ..." text in
the updater window did give me momentary cause for
concern. Couldn't MS put these messages past a
spellchecker? I know this is just beta, but it is a
security application (i.e. misspellings are expected in
malware, but from Microsoft???).

Hi Werner,
You can get the whole thing again at:
http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/spyware/software/default.mspx
It can take a while for distribution points to start moving the product
about, but the notice that the update is available will show up by itself.

Have you tried the taskbar on the right side, to see if that makes a
Well, checked on second Windows XP Polish (this time Professional, all
current updates) - the same effect, i.e. alerts fly off the screen when
taskbar is on the side of the desktop..

I'll see if I can reproduce the non-flying toast. One other note, I did not
lock my taskbar while on the right.

There is a problem with the autoupdate installing it over the old version.
Afterward, when I tried to update the program, the update dialog box just
froze and froze and froze. I could not shut it or the program down. It would
not even shut down with Task Manager, so I had to push the reset button on
my PC. Microsoft Antispyware had to be completely uninstalled using
Add/Remove Programs. Then I manually deleted the Microsoft Antispyware
folder in Program Files. I manually downloaded the new version 6-23-05 and
will install it and set it up from scratch. If it still does freezes when
trying to update, I will report back.

I am pleased to report that a clean install of the new beta works just fine.
No more freezes on updates as with doing an update install over the existing
version.

I'll see if I can reproduce the non-flying toast.

I assume you use english version of WinXP? Maybe the problem is just
because of some differences between english and polish system dll's?

One other note, I did not lock my taskbar while on the right.

I have locked it, but now, just to test, I have unlocked it and restarted
the MSAS (killing all hanging in the background processes of MSAS) - but it
makes no difference, "toasts" still fly away..

Let me take that back. Before the first reboot, it updated fine to 25. After
the first and subsequent reboots, it doesn't freeze, but it keeps trying to
install the same update file 25 to 27. At the end it says 27 has been
successfully installed, but if you go to update again, it tries to install
27 again. It's like the update isn't taking. Subsequent reboots, and it
still installs 27 over and over again. What should I do?

Sounds like an issue that's been around for a while with some installs. My
usual advice is to delete the definition files, and also clear Temporary
files. http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;892519

shows which files are the definition files.

According to that website 5725 is the latest version shown (June 9). When I
click Help - About, 5727 is shown (June 24).

Microsoft AntiSpyware Version: 1.0.613
This version expires on: 12/31/2005
Spyware Definition Version: 5727 (6/24/2005 1:31:51 PM)

If I go to File - Update and try to update it again, it says it's updating
from 5725 to 5727. So is the 5727 update being applied correctly, or not?
Usually, if I had the latest patterns, it wouldn't try to install the same
one over again.

Just use the article to show you which files to delete. Don't worry about
the specifics--it is often a version behind.

It sounds to me as though the new update is NOT being successfully applied
in your case.

It'd be nice to pin this down, if we can--you might try selectively
supressing these and re-trying the update.

I'd do that in this order:

1) Spybot's TeaTimer
2) Ad-Aware Pro's Ad-Watch
3) Ewido Antitrojan
4) NOD32 Antivirus

Yes Danny, here they are:
1) Software expiration will be extended to December 31, 2005.
2) Alerts Moving Quickly Across the Screen : Messages which move quickly
off the screen when the start bar is not docked horizontally are also fixed.
Users who dock their start bar on the sides of their screen will now be able
to read messages generated from Microsoft Windows AntiSpyware (beta). This
issue is what we dubbed the "Flying Toast Issue" and one which I was
passionate about getting fixed in this refresh build.
3) Support for Long Descriptions: Users of older builds only have access to
the short descriptions which ship as part of the signatures. These short
descriptions only provide limited information about potentially unwanted
software. Long descriptions in build 613 will help users by giving them more
information about the potentially unwanted software detected on their PCs.
4) Improved Winsock LSP removal mechanism: In some cases, removing spyware
LSPs, or can disrupt network functionality. Through enhancements made in
