Browser barely working, takes forever to load a web page

It's too late to determine the version number since I've uninstalled
it. Also, AddShield was unusual in that it didn't have its own
"program" or window. It was integrated into IE. So I don't know how
I would have determined the version number. But I got it at least
four years ago.

In any case, since I uninstalled AdShield, and restarted the
computer, the problem is still there. IE still takes between one
minute and forever to load a page.

Hey, Larry, any luck? Just curious. I still think that a clean boot will
yield useful information.

(I also noticed that magictouch hasn't come up with any responses over
at CastleCops. There are lots of other forums for HijackThis logs you
may want to consider...)

I kind of gave up on on CastleCops, there were no replies there for a week
or two. So I'm ready to try some other HijackThis sites if you want to
recommend any. Thanks.

Also, a strange development: The last two days I've had to use a dial-up
connection between I had a DSL program. With a dial-up connectoin, my
Internet Explorer works almost normally, even completely normally at times.
Does this tell us anything important about what's wrong with IE?

Larry

With dialup IE won't be using a proxy, whereas your DSL connection may
require a proxy.

I counted some 123 or so potential tracking cookies installed in your
system, and a good portion of the other which I pointed out, still there.

The question is:
What exactly have you done to correct your hijacks so far... Did you run
SpyBot Search and Destroy, AdAware, or anything other than that one program?

Did you have ANY protection running like SpywareBlaster, a firewall,
anti-virus?

Do you use something like bit torrent or other file sharing P2P?

A big hint: when people are willing to help you for free, never complain if
they want you to run something else, or do further diagnostics... makes them
less likely to help.

Good catch, Frank.

Larry, note your connection settings for *both* dial-up and DSL:

In Internet Explorer,

Tools | Internet Options | Connections tab

If you're running a proxy for dial-up (unlikely), this is where you
would find that info.

For DSL proxy info, click on the LAN Settings button.

If your issue is proxy-related, I would imagine the solution is to
either contact your ISP regarding settings or determining if you
(knowingly or not) are running a proxy program. You mentioned elsewhere
that Opera is not affected; I would note the connection settings for
that browser and compare them to IE's. Are you still running AdShield? I
believe it's a BHO (browser helper object), and it may or may not be a
factor.

And I never noticed if you answered my question about trying a clean
boot. Clean booting is an excellent troubleshooting technique.

Here's a good list:

http://merijn.org/forums.php

From this big list you may want to try any one (or more) of these:

SpywareInfo
DSLReports
TomCoyote Forums
GeeksToGo

But before you do, try the clean boot. Also check the proxy settings!

I just remembered you said you had uninstalled AdShield. But I don't
recall your answering my question about the associated dllhost.exe file.
If it's still running, that could be slowing you down.

between I had a DSL program

Oh boy talk about typos. I mean to write: "because I had a DSL problem."

There a lot more information here tonight. I'll look at it all tomorrow
when I'm fresh. Thanks all for all the new input.

Could you explain this? Also, does it offer any clues for how to fix my
IE?

While on your DSL connection go to
Tools | Internet Options | Connections | LAN Settings
Click the Use a proxy box to change whether or not it's checked. Try it
both ways.

People here have given me a bunch of suggestions, but pursuing all the
things I'm told I must do would take me an entire day of concentrated work,
and I haven't had time to get to this yet. I'll try to, soon.

Meanwhile, I'm still using Opera in place of IE, which is better in some
ways, and terrible in others. Same with Firefox, good in some ways, not in
others.

A major problem with Opera and Firefox for blogging is that they can't
display special characters like curly quotes and em dashes: they turn them
into that horrible multi-character code, like this: “. It blows my mind
that a popular browser could not handle normal characters, but so it goes.

In fact, I have to be careful not to open and make changes in Opera an older
blog entry that was created in IE -- it will render the entry unreadable by
converting the quotes and em dashes to that horrible code.

Weird.

Another weird thing about Opera is that you cannot copy fomatted text or
hyperlinks. If you select and copy text in Opera that contains formatted
text and hyperlinks, and then paste it in another application, it comes out
as unformatted plain text.
