I can sympathize with your disappointment in Epson. I have had several
Epson models clog, costing me $$$$ .

But I don't agree with your conspiracy theory. It has to do with how Epson
engineers their machines. They get EXCELLENT print quality. It's no
accident that they have been refining the same basic printhead technology
and have enjoyed leadership in the photo quality arena. That printhead
technology can be prone to clogging. It depends on how the machine is used.
And it goes with the territory, so to speak.

I am a seldom print color user. Worst kind of offender as far as an Epson
printer is concerned. Use 'em or loose 'em.

Yes. But then they make it as expensive as possible to use! You have
to go through multiple hoops to get an affordable print.

I have both Epson (for me) and HP (for my kids to abuse) so I agree
with you they both can be suckers if the owner don't know how to suck
them.

My main printing horse is still laser printer, Epson to print DVD,
and HP for my kids to print colorful school stuff.
 
A quick search on 'Epson clogged' on groups.google.com returns 7190
A quick search on Google of "HP Sucks" turned 43,600 hits. I just don't
think this is a very scientific way to evaluate printing technology......

Reminds me of a story that at Stanford they advertised for volunteers for a
study of obsessive-compulsive disorder. They were delighted to get 3,000
e-mails -- until they realized they were all from the same person!

HP is a large company which sells many non printer products, so
searching on HP would yield many results, many of which are non
printer related. Epson has an awful lot of complaints regarding
clogged printer heads, and Epson by far most primary product is their
printers.
I lost $300+ on Epson, so there's no way I'm getting Epson again.

I'd like to know which is the most cost effective printer with at
least a little bit of print quality.

It doesn't matter much what HP selling, if you want HP inkjet then
search for HP inkjet, if you want HP PhotoSmart inkyet then search for
HP PhotoSmart and the number should drop to around 5.

You lost $300+ on Epson? just don't add to the loss income yet, but
wait til you find out how much you gonna spen on HP then you will see
you gain or loss.

This is a simple math, go with Epson you will save lot of money on
INK. After about a year or around 10 sets of inks, you should say you
are getting your money back ... you can throw the printer away to get
newer one still worth the money, or keep it for few more years to save
more money. So to me, I don't see any loss here.

HP, if you don't learn to refill the cartridge then you will love
Epson because the OEM cartridge is 7-10 times cheaper (you can get OEM
cartridge between $2.50 - $3.xx a pop comparing $25-30 for HP).

Similar, Keeping in mind I am in small town Canada, I can get
compatible cartridges for my i320 for $15-20 the set, $10 or so each
(sounds expensive, but when you figure exchange, postage, ancillary
costs of doing e-buisness, and time, paying that price locally isn't
bad at all),

I have seen original carts sell under the $10 mark on the internet.

Well I came to Epson from HP. I had nothing but trouble with HP
printers with loading drivers, page feed trouble, clogs. My father
bought one recently and installit was a nightmare.

Would I buy Epson again? Only if I can make sure I can refill and
reset cartridges (I have not ried the stuff I have yet). And only, I
gather, if I wnat to use it a lot. Canon are better for occasional
use, I have read and been told.

I never have any Canon to know much about it myself. But just check
if Canon has OEM cartridge or you can get cheap ink cartridge then you
can save some money. Epson's ink is cheaper because no print head
built-in cartridge like HP.

I got my first HP Photosmart 7350 few months ago, and I had one heck
of problem to get the driver to install and work correctly. It took me
over a month to get the printer to work (I re-monitoring this newsgroup
after stopped for 3-4 years) and I still don't know why or what I did to
get it to work, and now I ain't gona mess with the driver.

I am running WinXP, and I had to install and install the driver for
over hundred times, I gave up, tried again but no luck.. it even caused
booting problem to the system... then one day it decided to work and I
can't be happier.

Most Canons are that way too. The chips in Epsons, and excellent
prices on Epsons drew me to them.

I spent over a month searching for answer, I joined few Windows
newsgroups and rejoined this "comp.periphs.printers" after unsubscribed
for around 2-3 years, and many people have the very similar problem.
And mine was one of the worst.
