I take this to mean that you use only self-powered
external enclosures for USB/Firewire HDs. Did the
ones that had heat problems have a fan that ran
whenever the power was ON? Or was there no fan?
Or did the fan turn off when the PC shutdown? I'm
trying to gauge how important a fan is for external HD
longevity.

Virtually every USB/Firewire EHD we've had experience with was equipped with
an external PS and a mini-fan of sorts. AFAIK, every fan ran while the unit
was powered up. The only exception I can recall where a fan was routinely
absent from the device was in the case of an external enclosure housing a 2
1/2" HD.

Looking at the Maxtor website, I see no fan mentioned
for the One Touch II family of external HDs. That's probably
the reason for the vertical positioning of the HD - to maximize
convective cooling - and a reason for easy over-heating if
the convective airflow is blocked.
