Now that you have Vista working, would be a good time to back up your data.
I hope that Vista works well for you, but there are bugs in it, and not
everything works. You will probably decide to go back to XP, or your system
may crash and become unbootable for real, so you need to get a backup of all
your data for the XP restore.

Don't feel badly. The MSFTies often hide their IPODS there on campus when
their product manager comes near. But as Todd points out, nothing like
recovering from a scare to treat it as a big reminder to backup. Yesterday
in the NYTimes' Circuits David Pogue made a big point of Connecting the easy
backup in Windows One Care (which makes it worth the 3 license price alone)
with a stat that 90% of people don't backup according to "MSFT surveys." I
think that figure is reasonably in the ball park.

Backup and then have a go at getting your Vista working.

sigh. I woke up this morning and Vista crashed on me again this morning. Now
I can only get on here in safe mode. I tried doing the XP thing, but it turns
out I don't have a recovery CD for XP, so I used the normal one. I changed
the BIOS crap, and it was going ok, until it told me to put in a CD of a
previous version of windows, because it didn't recognise this one. And our
family isn't in the best financial position to buy a new PC. We used to be,
but my mom is now in grad school, so she can't work. I guess safe mode will
work OK until 2007...

I don't know if this will help, but I found this description of the error
that occoured.

It's doing it again... shutting down. Oh well. I have a question. My dad
bought an external hard drive he doesn't need now. Can I use that as my main
HDD, like a partition and install XP and be OK??

Sorry kid, can't install an operating system on an external hard drive.

But, why don't you save all your important documents to dad's external hard
drive and then please, for all of our sanity, reformat the darn thing and
re-install XP?

Just a thought...

I keep getting the BSOD and I can't reinstall XP from the setup phase. DO I
just have to buy I new computer?

Calming, relaxing, breathing... Call the nerdiest kid from your school you
can think of, promise him a date with your sister if he can fix your system.

Seriously, though, no, not a new computer, but if I have it all straight,
the XP CD-ROM currently in your possession is an UPGRADE. Is this correct?

If this is true, there are four choices, two are cheap and none are good.

1. Find the original WIN 95/98 CD that came with the computer, along with
the floppy, and start over from scratch, first installing that, then
upgrading to XP, then stopping with the whole Vista idea...

2. Find a bootable floppy somewhere, reformat the computer hard drive and
then install VISTA.

3. Purchase a copy of any WIN 95/98 on eBay that comes with the Product Key
and the floppy, then follow step 1. ($50.00)

4. Purchase a full retail copy of XP ($200.00)

Stop posting all over the place. It's difficult to follow. We are trying
to help you.

My bad. It's just extremely frustrating when I ask for help and some people
just post saying how dumb I am. I know I was, but why do they need to point
it out. Yes, it is an upgrade, but XP came preloaded on my PC. I got in 2
years ago.

Well, then call the maker of the computer, Gateway, Dell, whomever, and for
a nominal fee they will ship you a restore CD. That's the best thing to do.

It turns out he has an XP cd, but it is an Upgrade edition and he doesn't
have a cd from an older version of Windows. I have encouraged him to borrow
one from a friend so he can get past the verification step.

You can determine whether you have a recovery CD or an XP CD by opening your
eyes and reading what is embossed on the CD. Also MSFT software has a part
number to the left of that big hole in the middle and embossed around the
hole on the flip side.

And this scenario should work for him. Most people can scare one of these
up quite easily on their block or their dorm at least in my country.
