Canon is better than Epson.
Because on Canon, you can use refill ink.
and it ink tank's electronic will not stop you from printing after refill.

I have a Epson before(model 830), I never success use a refill ink on this
photo printer. I think this photo printer is capable of printing very good
quality photo. That is why Epson people doesn't allows you to use refill
ink.
A refill ink will never produce good quality photo, it become meaning less
to use a 6 color ink tank.
You might as well bought a 3 color ink tank color printer.
 
Your issues are because you are not using Epson ink and carts. Buy all
OEM ink and your problem should go away.
Epson is not loosing anything. They know you will buy a new printer
soon. Maybe you will go to Canon. So they will loose you but they will
probably gain some idiot that is mad at Canon.

Now I do agree that OEM ink is overpriced.

You really want to use Canon ink in a Canon printer.  Your printhead will last, prints will be more fae resistant and the color quality will be better.

Now if you get mad at all of the printer companies you can pull a feather out of a pidgeon and get some cheap fountain pen ink and you do not have to use any printer.

I'm a great fan of industrial-strength products. You're talking my
language. But I've got one question:

Let's say I want to buy one of these machines used. Would it have been
beat-to-within-one-inch-of-death by its office users? Can I get
affordable repair parts in that case? Is it made to be more easily
repairable than consumer products are nowadays?

These are my bottom-line questions. I'd appreciate good answers. Thanks.

That really depends. I have bought printers on ebay with less than a dozen
pages printed, others have been at half of life. You should look into the
page count of any printer you are considering, and compare the actual page
count with the warranty page count (multiple the duty cycle times the
warranty period). In the case of the Business Inkjet 1000 this was 6250
pages per month and probably a 12 month warranty, a warranty life of 75K
pages. A printer with 200K pages would be well worn, one with 20-50K
pages should have plenty of life.

Parts for HP are generally available from http://partsurfer.hp.com/, or
links from there. Unfortunately it appears that the BIJ 1000 parts are not
currently available.
