Can you suggest a news group?

Several. They are all private so you'll have to follow instructions to
set up OE or you can read them online.

You must scroll down the upper right of the page to find this:

|Since these are private newsgroups, your server will require you to

Hmmm, that seems to be the top four list of bloatware/invasive
apps :)

How come AOL isn't on that list?

Ooops, I forgot! Really, AOL isn't on the list because of a senior
moment, I intended it to be there, honest I did.

BTW, we're not talking about just bloatware/invasive apps, we're
talking about apps that can/will crash your computer depending on the
other software installed. The applications I mentioned have all had
some very severe problems with compatibility with other software
problems, a good example is some years back a friend tried to install a
new version of (sorry!) AOL and forgot to disable McAfee. McAfee
decided the new AOL files were viruses and proceeded to "disinfect"
them. He wound up with a computer that wouldn't boot as McAfee had
deleted/disinfected/bollexed up most of the files in the C:\Windows
directory.

The fix was format, re-install, change ISPs and Virus programs.

OK, I realize the above was the result of his failing to follow
directions but how easy is it to forget to disable a virus scanner
during an install? I believe you shouldn't have to.

I use AVG and have never had to disable it during an install and I like
it that way!

BTW, one program I ran under Windows 2000 and really liked was Roxio Go
Back, it works and works well and I'd recommend it to those needing
such a program (it's much more complete then the XP system restore).
The GoBack software was bought by Symantec and is now Norton GoBack but
last I checked, they haven't changed it in any way so... if you want
such a program, get it NOW before Symantec "improves" it.

FWIW, this may not have any relation to any of the above but very early
in the Windows 95 Beta Testing (I wuz one of the testers) I learned the
VERY hard way not to run the above software, any of it from any of
them. Since then, I've run (in sequence) Win95, Win96sr2 Win98,
Win98SE, WinME, WinNT 4.0, Win2000 and Windows XP.

I've not had a crash since Windows 95 beta. None. Nada. Zippo.

Again, it may or may not be in any way related to the above but when
someone tells me their machine crashed, I always ask what software
they're running and they always tell me one of the above mentioned...

As always, YMMV.

Winserv doesn't appear to be an MS application, I couldn't find it on my machine or in a search of the KB and TechNet.

A web seach turned up:

I've been using SP2 Candidate 2 for about 10 days, now, and
everything is working better than before.

We'll see..........................

I did the beta 1 of SP2 and had a frightful uninstall experience. I did rc1
and a few things conflicted. Now I am doing rc2 and am delighted with it.
I have yet to have a program that chokes on it. If you understand the beta
caveats and can accept them, use it. I did not have to turn off NAV (a
first) or anything else. I really like windows update under rc2.
