Beware of SP2!

If you want information on SP 2 go to the SP 2 newsgroups referenced
on this link:
http://www3.telus.net/dandemar/xpsp2.htm

As for the blue screens CNN mentioned.
Those have happened as well as a large variety of others.
Since SP 2 is in Beta, issues are not uncommon and many will be
resolved before the final release.
Beta by its nature is expected to have issues.

Many of the installation issues of SP 2 could be eliminated by simply
adequately preparing the computer in advance.
Do not install SP 2 with the expectation that existing issues will be
resolved, unless the issue is specifically mentioned as a fix of SP 2.
Instead all prior issues need to be resolved first.

With the large number of computers in the world and no two identical,
it is impossible to expect all possible issues resolved before
release.

Some things to check before installing updates particularly Service
Packs:

Get prepared to be blasted by the MVP's. I posted similar warnings after
attending a TechNet presentation on Deployment of SP2 for developers and was
blasted by several MVP's.

I'm not an MVP but I can understand why they might be upset as very few
people had any of the problems mentioned on that website as you'll see
if you follow the newsgroups for SP2 RC1.

Some have reported compatibility problems with Symantec, Norton, McAfee
and ZoneAlarm products but I've learned never to install anything from
these companies because of compatibility problems so, like most using
SP2 RC2, I've had no problems at all.

Errr..... senior moment, I meant RC2.

What happen is people forgot to turn off their firewall & anti-virus
program before installing sp2.

You can keep them on. While you are downloading sp2.
When it done. It will start installing. When the eula come up.
Don’t hit ok yet. Disconnect or unplug your internet connection.
Now disable your firewall & virus programs
(You might need to use services.msc to turn off the antivirus and
firewall off-No need to set it to disable-keep it on automatic.)

Now you may click ok to install it.

I have an amd machine and sp rc2 beta is still working fine.

Uninstall service pack2 also uninstall sp1. That is strange.

MS is well aware of the problems with SP2 as evidenced by my attendance at
their
deployment for Developers seminar why should anyone try to cover it up?

Are they planning to fix the problems before releasing it?

Well, actually the "fixing" is up to the developers to make their software
compliant with XP2.

As with XP the SP2 RC2 wasn't perfect. Like XP it should only have been installed and used by those with eXPeriance and who at least know basic trouble shooting. There are adequate warnings that this SP should not be installed on your main computer but rather on a secondary one that you have no worries if it locks or crashes. I for one have SP2 RC2 installed since it's release and simply love the added reliability and security that it affords. Not even one hiccup here. But like any software there can and will be problems if not installed correctly. I disagree with the notion that firewalls or virus programs need to be turned off during install. I downloaded the SP and installed from my Hard drive while still connected to the internet and having both my firewall and anti-virus installed as well as not uninstalling RC1. Now either my three year old equipment has some special features that provide such robust performance or perhaps I have tweaked the registry to the point where XP is so solid you can't corrupt it. Never never install any Beta software unless you at least know some basic trouble shooting or recovery techniques and if you do then stop your whining if something goes wrong that you can't fix.

I think I'll watch from the sidelines for awhile before downloading it.

You might want to read the SP2 newsgroups and see if there are any
problems that apply to your particular setup.

If not, think about trying it, unlike SP2 RC1, the RC2 version seems to
uninstall properly if you need to do so.

I don't plan on installing it at all. I don't generally recommend that for
everyone. But it just doesn't do much for me. I would have to disable pretty
much all of the "features" included in it.
I do not use auto updates and never will.
I do not use Internet Explorer.
I do not use Outlook Express.
I do not use XP's firewall.
I use my own popup blocker.
Probably a few other things I can't think of at the moment as well.

Can you suggest a news group?
