I got my old canon on its legs again. Thanks for the feeback/
responses.

I personally hate canon, but i've been through every other major brand
and they all suck and canon was my last choice.
Here's how corny this canon printer is. It has the power button on the
CORNER!! You cannot even feed paper into the tray without a fight
because the tray is not even smooth! I mean c'mon! .. yet it's the
best printer I've found! Scary.

I've yet to find a truly faithful printer that prints without any
flack reliably over and over. Reminds me of answering machines. It
took decades for the human race to get one to work bug free. So much
for technologically advanced innovation.

I have laser printers, inkjets and plotters in my house of the Canon and
HP brand. In all there are eight printing devices. I can't really
complain about any of them. They are all very reliable and work well,
especially the laser printers and plotter. The plotter is almost ten
years old. Maybe I'm just lucky with, or less critical of, the printing
devices I use and the performance they provide.

Try finding a decent keyboard these days. It's nearly impossible.

If you can get a Cherry CyMotion Expert where you live, I highly recommend
them. The same goes for Thinkpad laptops.

I second that Michael. I rarely have any problems. A little cleaning
and tweaking here and there and all works well. Then again, I have a
brother that would have trouble with a #2 pencil. Some folks have bad
Karma with anything mechanical and that's not a crime either.

Very true. I'm actually amazing at how well printers work considering
how complicated they are and the precise nature of their operation.

I have not problems with my Canon IP4000 using Canon BCI6 ink.

10yo printers are more reliable than 1yo printers IMHO.

Agree and when (if) I do find one, I buy a half dozen of them and
squirrel them away.

The Laserjet 4 is a reliable workhorse, good for a few hundred thousand
pages or more. No color, no duplexer but reliable and generally available
for $50 or less used.

As Jan mentioned, it will require a lot more information to give you an
informed answer. How many pages per month do you expect to print? Do you
need color or is B&W adequate? Do you need to print photo's? Do you care
about speed?

Thats incorrect.  The new printers on very reliable.

Printing an image onto a sheet of paper is complicated? What you
consider difficult? (I dare ask)

I want to print. This means I want to put paper in one end and the
image to appear on the other. Simple yet find a printer that can
accomplish this simple task every time ie no jams ie no hassles ie no
flashing lights ie no bugs at all. Simple request, yet name that
printer. Speed is not an issue. Downtime is however bigtime. I've had
a couple dozen printers by now and none were up to the task. Some have
came close. Not close enough though .. still hunting.

Nope. I've yet to find one. No model number? Don't be shy.

As I've said I've got my 1yo canon online again. It has two input
trays. One failed, the other is still functioning .. (knocking on
wood).

Placing millions of small dots on a page in precise order and size while
considering millions of available colors seems like a chore to me.

I don't have much in the way of problems with the printers in our house.
I tell them to print and they obey. There might be the occasional
problem but they are few and far between. Some of them are 3-4 years
old and still going strong. The plotter is over ten years old. I have
HP 2100M and 1200 laser printers that have been virtually bullet proof.

I know some people have problems if they buy a printer that doesn't meet
their required monthly duty cycle for printing.

Take a computer course. This feat ain't that difficult in 2008.

What computer course are you suggesting?  What application are you
suggesting?

Bitmapping.
Application?
Regardless, my printer issue is purely wrt the mechanics involved, not
the print quality. It seems that technology often takes three steps
backwards to advance a step, ie the beeper and peripherals (printers
and scanners and keyboards) of late. They finally achieved a good
working mouse. So one down. A dozen to go.

So just because a technology is ubiquitous and affordable, it "ain't that
difficult." Yeah, it really sounds like you have a grasp of what you're
talking about.
