Try EZTrust anti-virus and Firewall. It is free for a year.
It comes with the free MS update disk (it is sent to you by MS at no cost,
not even postage) or I believe you can dl EZTrust here:

XP's own firewall and AVG 6.0 does it for me, supported by Spybot and
Adaware for the rest.

which is the best free antivirus?

the same question came/comes every day. Please first read back this NG
before you start again.

BTW: There is no "best" antivirus. It depends on your OS, your installed
programs, your (internet) behavior and so on and so on. And a 100%
antivirus is still on the market and will never be. Perhaps be careful
with Norton, AVG, Avast - there are a lot of problems with them
(updating, side effects with other programs (firewals, mailclients,
uninstalling behavior etc. etc. for example). Perhaps try the free
"Antivir". It's even not perfect, but uncomplicated to install and to
configure. And one time more: Read this NG even back and especially use
your brain (safer hex) first especially when using the internet.

XPs own firewall doesn't block outbound traffic so you'll not notice
the plethora of spyware AdAware misses phoning home.

....like the question "Athlon or Pentium"...

Well... I switched from Norton to Avast and found no probs til today:
Updating is perfect, there are no detectable side-effects with other
programs, and the uninstalling behaviour is correct.

Oh no, just looking for more substance.

perhaps i'm being jaded but i suspect the substance of the linux as an
av measure argument would prove to be just another round of the linux
zealousy this group has seen a bunch of times before...
