People in this forum are fond of AVG, Avast, and AntiVir Personal
Edition. "Best" is a matter of personal preference. I like AntiVir
because it is small and light on system resources.

Best free antivirus?

My experiences with free AV programs. YMMV

AntiVir PE
http://www.free-av.com/
Very easy on resources :-)
Works when others fail :-)
Large update files :-(

AVG
Sluggish on some machines :-(
Defeated by a trojan on my daughter's comp :-(
(AntiVir to the rescue!)

Avast
Sluggish on older machines :-(
Defeated by a trojan on best friend's comp :-(
(Again - AntiVir installed and solved the problem)

Even though AntiVir PE is a PITA to update if you don't have a fast
connection, I strongly recommend it.

If not for AntiVir's lack of resident (real time) file and e-mail scanning,
I would agree. It's a great program for disciplined users. :)

Doesn't it have a real time scanner. The web page for the free version
states "the resident Virus Guard serves to monitor file movements
automatically".

From what I understand AntiVir does have real time file scanning but no mail
scaning.

I think AVAST is the best overall, and the most versatile. It does
on-demand, on-access, and scans e-mail from all e-mail clients, not
just Outlook Express.

yes, But you must re-register Avast every 14 months. From the web site:

"The activation key expiration is not limited, but program updates will only
be available for the next 14 months. After this period, it is necessary to
re-register."

I have found AVG to be VERY user friendly, even my Dad can use it and you do
not need to re-register every X months.

AntiVir has real time file scanning. Although it doesn't scan mail
directly it would catch the virus when/if it becomes a file.
