A UNIX-based OS, available as both freeware and pre-packaged and sold.
GUI's are available for it as freeware as well. Much more secure than
Windows.

Here is some reading re Norton Ghost , being new , your head will be
spinning for a while , remember to use Google often . Example , put
the word > partioning < in and read up .

Yes, I know. I was being facetious. I have a daily battle of wits with
co-workers who use Linux for real-time operations. My point was how so few
consumers use it and how few applications are available for it. At least it
is more popular than Macintosh.

No. Macintosh is some sort of apple. I'm told it tastes like chicken....
 
Acronis TrueImage uses Linux to while restoring.

However, NOT freeware - $50.

Partimage OTOH IS freeware. Probably available on most distros. One
caveat with it, however, it can only backup NTFS partitions if the
file system is not fragmented or compressed.
 
Ntfsclone is also available on most freeware distros. It can backup any
NTFS safely, even if it's fragmented or compressed.
