Lol Bernie--

I knew if I worked with this stuff long enough I would see the Windows OS analogy to a hooker. I just didn't know the time and the place. I don't think your description is confined to only working girls, but I guess that discussion is for another place. I also never thought about security features in connection with working girls, but I lead a very sheltered life.

I fully agree with you and a lot of people do that UAC's implementation should have the efficacy without sacrificing security and get a lot more user friendly. You're a developer and I'm not. And this is one of many areas where it's easy for me to say what should be but without being in a developer's shoes I don't know what they're up against. That to me is one of yet another advantages of being a developer.

I have come to look upon some of the UAC permission challenges as one more game that comes with the OS. If you ever figure out how I can access XP's My Docs from a Vista boot let me know. I can easily access anything on the XP desktop simply following the file path C:\Documents and Settings\User Profile\Desktop and I can get to My Docs. But the usual take control permissions up to the last parent and child and object won't let you in the XP My Docs folder from Vista. Also interestingly on Vista you can copy folders to XP with no permissions prompt, but the reverse isn't true.

I have seen a very elegant and well written explanation of this attributes problem with My Docs on a dual boot that I could put up here but how to get around it is what I'm interested in if anyone knows.

I have no problem opening anything inside the XP my documents folder from Vista. I turned off UAC though, why leave it on?

Likewise, no problem reading or updating xp my docs that I use regularly. I haven't turned off UAC.

Haven't hardware retailers been asking for a new OS for years?

I do like Aero so I guess that leaves me in a minority in this NG?

But somehow I think Aero and 64 bit will attract the attentions of
people that buy computers :)

One of my favourite features is the horizontal directory thingy (tree?)

Sorta miss it when I go back to XP Pro at work.

Don't know if it's a minority but I think Aero is great too. But I
haven't found anything at all that I like about the new Windows
Explorer. When I go back to XP it looks old without the new taskbar and
start button and start menus. Those things are very attractive but I can
find my way around XP a lot faster and with fewer keystrokes and
mouseclicks.

I have seen a couple of demos on just what third party devs are likely to do
with Glass in their products. If the desktop doesn't grab you some of the
coming third party apps will. Things like 3d cd jewel cases that you can
rotate and read the backsides, etc.

John, relax. If you're so unhappy with Vista and Office 2007 then why are you
even here? If you're not happy with the programs then offer you suggestions
and fixes to Microsoft instead of moaning and complaining here! What you seem
to be forgetting is that Vista and Office are BETA PROGRAMS! They are not
supposed to be perfect. If you don't like the heat then get out of the Beta
kitchen.

Well, ectually I feel that it is also interesting to reed the negative
opinion on Vista on these newsgroups. It iz wot iz called demokracy..

While a little over the top with the ribbon, hes iz speeking to an
intelligent crowd and I would suspect that no one wood be incited to
violence as reading Sharia law might.

Anyway, he may be 'beta' and I iz 'RC1' and I am not enthralled by the
glassy look either. I used Windows Klassic look on XP and I can use it here
if I want.to.

And he kan continue using Office 2003 if he so wishes. If I wozn't a
developer, I wood not have updated from Office 97 which iz fine for me. And
quicker than Office 2003. Certainly loads in a flash whereas Office 2003
takes quite a while even on a nifty machine. Access 2003 is markedly slower
loading than Access 97.

Lets hear it all!!
