I think I'd like to forward compliments to developers and marketers for
making a public beta available.

On this machine Vista 64 bit (at a beta stage) is an awesome experience.

Compliments to all involved

awesome experience.

you must either be high on drugs or be blind or be the nephew of bill
gates... or this is the first part of a prank...

because you cant be realllyyy meaning this!

JJS: neither of your conjectures hold although I must admit that a
little Sauvignon Blanc has gone well with the weather today.

As a general rule I endeavour to mean what I say and day what I mean :)

CTPs and betas are, in my opinion, an incredible way to do things

I hope that the industry sector follows accordingly in best practice mode

ok betas and CTPs are great.. but you actually like vista???

were you refering to vista as an "awsome experience"??

Yes indeedy.

For some visual based stuff under XP Pro I had a preference to use a
"big grey" desktop.

I am enthralled by Aero (I guess my credibility now takes an awesome dive?).

Now I seek mutliple desktops under a single user login so i can switch
easily from full aero to "big grey" to online TV if i wish.

maybe an alternative is multiple logins but i don't know how these
observe single user EULA protocols and paradigms. [ :( ]

ps - you gotta admit Office 2007 is suite?

I sure wish they still had Clippy and his friends in Word. Clippy helped me
learn Word and I could sure use his help in Word 2007.

Agreed - Help seems obviously lacking in Word 2007 (where is it? First
user stumbling block?)

But there again, the white on blue question mark does seem obvious even
in Excel?

For what it is worth: in my daytime job (online tutoring of IT
application software) i see an increasing trend of first time users
straight into XP Home with broadband and they seem to enthuse.

Yes, the blue question mark is there, but Clippy is an active helper.

I appreciate that a user has to put in at least some modicum of effort
to progress into proficiency.

Great dialogue Joe.

I don't mind being accountable at all and don't mind your questions in the
least (they were sorta cool anyway :) )

whoa whoa whoaaaaa waitt....!!!

ok I can forgive you for liking vista.. I can understand that the glassy
look might let people overlook its huge GUI flaws...
but Office 2007???

NOW THAT is an abomination, monstrosity!

That ribbon thing should be torn off, wrapped around the throat of the
baboon programmer who thought of it and choke him (no not really choke him..
never violence... wrapped around his nose then ..YEAH his NOSE! he is a
baboon and has a long nose you know...!! lol )
Now I call that BAD design! As for clippy they killed him.. Even Microsoft
had cartoons showing people frustrated with clippy.. and they wanted him out
of town fast as can be!!!

Acually, I like using Vista beta 2 but granted, it has a lot of bugs. Gotta
love beta software :).

As for Office, the new ribbon does take time to get used to, but I honestly
like it a lot better then the previous version. Personally, it makes
finding things easier. So I hope it stays.

It was done to sell. It's done every OS Beta time. Retail sales flew into the ground 20% down and OEM sales are 20% up last quarter and this gives another compelling incentive to keep this long standing tradition going. It was done to sell. It wasn't done out of any concern for the welfare of the public. It's been done in every other OS at least since 95. I have enough RC1 and RC2 XP CDs to make a giant silver sculpture.

It has always been easy to get the Aero effect and those of Aero's spinoffs with much less graphics card for years with 3rd party just as it has always been easy to get a richer browsing experience with Firefox extensions than with IE's come lately tabs. Aero is eye candy not functionality unless you consider those mini replications of the window functional in any respect or you think flip 3D will help you with maneuvers off the high dive.

Naw Deebs Help is there and enhanced in Office 2007.

You could add clippy with hacks. You can also make the other characters do interesting things if you have that kind of time on your hands. But help is certainly in Office 2007 as it was in Office 2003 linked to the server on the web site. Help in Office 2007 is built into Tool Tips.

If you have Office 2007 installed, you should be able to access an Online help site. Some people may ahve to add it to their trusted sites but most don't.

"Check out our beta Office Online site! With the release of Office 2007 Beta 2, we've got an Office Online beta site. It's accessible to anyone with Office 2007 Beta 2 installed on their machine, and is being actively updated as we find and fix bugs in preparation for the launch of Office 2007 later this year. When we launch, this site will replace the existing Office Online site."

Hope this "helps",

Vista looks very pretty. Actually I'm astonished at how pretty it looks
even without Aero and with it is very cool. But it's prettiness is that
of a whore who will provide a good time as long as its in her perceived
interest but is not the kind of girl you'd want to marry. Beneath the
looks are some good security features that are made bad because of the
default way they are implemented. It is MS saying "We got the message
and look how well we've taken it on board". They are bound to get up the
noses of an awful lot of users of any kind other than first time buyers.
There are also changes that look kinda pretty but are less functional
rather than more such as windows explorer. It's a bit like going from a
really fast and well run DSL ISP to AOL on dialup. I expect by the time
it is released it will be more like DSL than dialup but it will still be
AOL. And this presents more of an opportunity for an alternative desktop
O/S to come along. I just hope some big potential players are thinking
the same thing.
