TINY,

What you state you did should have worked,

worked for me. With a pregnant pause in the middle, but it finished and
now I'm good again...for another 12 seconds or so. :)

I finally got it I think I was cut and paste the sites and it didn't work
because of the little > signs so I deleted them and now there in the drop
down list there is 4 of them Thanks for your time and help everybody

TINY,

What you state you did should have worked, ie: there should have been 4
choices in the dropdown list, because you altered the url.ini file to make
it so.
It worked for Roy Colson (part of this thread)
Can I ask you to check your url.ini file in AVG to ensure the 'Server Names
& Server URLs' are still in there?
If they are, and you still get nothing in the dropdown list, I need to ask
the group for someone else to help us sort the problem for you.
Please post back.

I went in there and deleted the old one and copy and pasted the one you have
save it close everything and rebooted and try 4 times so far and where the
drop down list is to update is blank what did I do wrong.
..ini
file
AVG,
as
follows:-

[SERVER_NAME]
1=free.grisoft.cz
2=ftp.grisoft.com
3=www.grisoft.com
4=akamai_grisoft

[SERVER_URL]
1=http://free.grisoft.cz/softw/60/fe
2=ftp.grisoft.com/pub/softw/60/fe
3=http://www.grisoft.com/softw/60/fe
4=http://www.grisoft.com/akm/softw/60/xx/
Actual URL=4

and use the number 4 site, ie the akamai one.

Having changed the url.ini file, one must shutdown and reboot for the change
to take effect in AVG. (this is something I have seen to be missing from
some previous posts)
Instead of just the one site 'free.grisoft.cz' you will have 4 to choose
from. Approaching the akamai site that way works for me and so should for
you.

I hope I've done a proper job for you this time

you
have
up
to
date. This morning I get the failure message (user
initiaed...!)
even
tho I have rarely to never had much problem with the auto update.
SOMEthing seems funky (I tried all 3 addresses in the modified .ini
file
and the one dfrog suggested...it does indeed come up 'forbidden area'.

Have no answer for the 'forbidden area' thingy. I picked the
akamai
site
info from this newsgroup a few days ago and have since used it for the
last
few updates, all successful.
Maybe the sun shines on me (just for a change :) )

Hope your updating becomes successful too

TINY & Mister Charlie,
I haven't been totally helpful.
I just tried that akamai site and got the same 'forbidden area' thingy.
What I should have said is that I added to the url.ini file within
AVG,
as
follows:-

[SERVER_NAME]
1=free.grisoft.cz
2=ftp.grisoft.com
3=www.grisoft.com
4=akamai_grisoft

[SERVER_URL]
1=http://free.grisoft.cz/softw/60/fe
2=ftp.grisoft.com/pub/softw/60/fe
3=http://www.grisoft.com/softw/60/fe
4=http://www.grisoft.com/akm/softw/60/xx/
Actual URL=4

Here is an update "weallhatebillgates" had a few added links to the url.ini
that might help. I changed the link names on the last two and the choice of
update site, but those just my preference so I could keep the links straight
and I found the update and connection on that link to be very fast. If you
copy and paste the bits between the lines you'll have a bunch more choices
for updates. As for the restart if you're using XP/2k you don't have to
restart the machine but you'll have to open AVG control center and hit the
"activate" button to get the program to add the new ini into memory. That
may or may not take a couple of times and may actually take shutting down
AVG and restarting it but you shouldn't have to restart Windows. I'm not
too sure if that will work for the 9x versions of Windows as I just don't
spend that much time using them.

Good luck.
