AVG or AntiVir?

It really depends on your needs. I like Anti-Vir because it is updated
all thet time (daily) but AVG does mail scanning. Both are very good.

I used AVG for a couple of years until a nasty little virus slipped
by. I converted to Antivir about a year and a half ago and have been
very pleased. Updates are very frequent and I have had no problems.

Who he?


I've found AVG7 a memory hog - no prob on this box, but on aother 128 meg
one can crash it; earler AVGs were ok (IME)

I'm running Avast, and Antivir, one on each box, can't really tell the
diffeence except antivir can be disabled and restarted very easily

AVG was giving me too many problems and task manager showed high resources
usage. Switched to AntiVir PE and find it uses low memory and updates at
least daily. Don't know if it's effective. I like it. I've been told that
mail scanners are redundant but there will probably be others who say
untrue. Who knows.

I am for Avast as well. It updates daily and sometimes more then once a
day. It has caught a virus or two. I was a fan of AVG.

I liked avg6 and had a few problems getting avg7free going properly .. I
like the email checking of avg7free once I learned how to dig into the
settings and disable the smtp service for outgoing mail .. I don't really
need to check my outgoing mail and once I disabled the smtp service it
works great. I don't run the active checker ..........

a cool thing about AVGfree7 is the way it handles all email on my home
network ...... I run winproxy(payware) on an older machine that does NAT
and proxy/firewall stuff .. the machine connected to my cable box . and
the one running AVG .. and AVGfree checks incoming mail from all machines
due to the new version7 way it monitors the email ports ..... pretty cool

there are forums on the Avg site that can help you with little problems
if you have trouble ... it's just a little tricky if you have problems
not big trouble ... give it an hour before giving up .. I like it

AntiVir is Ok too

digital camera's "Easy Share" software (17.5 MB), but more than Outlook
Express (8 MB) or one of the svchost.exe jobs (12 MB).

How much is a lot?

AVGUARD.EXE - 7,876k
AVWUPSRV.EXE - 2,112k

I like Avast, I used AVG before, but I think Acast is much better, for a
start Avast supposrt all email clients, where AVG only supports a
couple. Also updating on Avast is much better.

avgcc.exe: 1.7 - 5.0 Mb
avgupsvc.exe: 2.6 - 3.2 Mb
(avgemc.exe: 14.1 Mb,

Everyone is missing the question .... How much is a lot?

I've been using AVG for several years, but it's extremely hard to get it
updated these days with all the demand on their servers. Thinking about
trying something else.

I rely on the automatic update. But once in a while I do the manual update.
I just tried it.

(Of course, I did not get an update, because the auto update already ran
today.)

I didn't stop using AVG for memory usage, but more because it is a PITA
in comparison to Avast. Just install Avast and forget about it. If you
use the Avast screen saver, it will run a system check while the
computer is idle.

Update direct from www.grisoft.com, works instantly every time, and a much
faster download.
