Hello all,
Just installed AVG 6 and want to test email scanning. Help file says
a AVG will add a 'certification' message to in & out going emails
showing that they have been checked. Have set these switches and
tried sending and receiving but see no such message in the emails.
Any ideas?

What email client are you using? It only works with supported clients.
Known to me is OE and Eudora, hopefully others will confirm which
alternative clients are supported.

I know that it doesn't work with Calypso.

Yes: good. Mostly they annoy people, because they get appended to news
posts, as well, and are seen as mostly AVG advertising.

If you want to test; download the eicar.zip test file, and try to
send it as an attachment in a mail to yourself.

That's interesting. I guess that applies only to users who post via
an email client. I use Free Agent and of course my posts don't show
any AVG messages. The answer obviously is not to use an email client
to post to newsgroups.

I do leave the certifications on as I think it is useful to let
recipients of emails know that something checked my email before it
left me, and it will check stuff coming in. It might also serve to
prod others into getting their emails checked. After all, if most
users had their systems and email checked, there would be less viruses
going around, right?

Of course, it can be seen as "viral marketing" (pun intended), I
suppose.

It's mostly the OE crowd.

At least you should amend the wording because to state it is 'certified virus
free' is pure bollox. At best it may be "free of the viruses that AVG6
currently detects".

BTW1: I'm not having a poke at AVG in particular, in fact I use it myself.

BTW2: I just tested AVG6 for eicar.com, eicar.zip and eicar2.zip (i.e. double-
zipped) attachments. It trapped each one, both outbound and inbound.

BTW3: AVG6 also trapped the eicar files being downloaded from the web site, so
you'll have to temporarily disable Check Executable Viruses to get them.

I have msOutlook and msOutlook Express installed in win XPhome but I
only use Eudora5x

I don't get any indication that the email checking is working. I
thought I saw an icon in the sys tray one time but it is not there
now. I have Norton AV installed the scanners are turned off.

I'd like to buy the Pro version but I need to figure out these things
first. Is there any way to get these questions to Grisoft ?

Using OE6 and AVG6 (home edition) on XP Home I was continually getting
attachments with the Win32.Swen Worm. AVG would not alert until I tried to
save the attachment elsewahere. Adding POPFile to the mix meant that AVG
would alert for each message POPFile saw but could not remove the
attachments. Switching to AVAST! solved the problem, attachments are cleaned
before they get archived by OE. This is INHO the better way to go.

I suppose they do alert the user whether the scanner is working or not
though?,as the original poster noticed.Funny thing is i never hear anyone
complaining about avasts certification.Maybe AVG is just more popular or
more avast users dont use OE/Outlook or Eudora.

Only works with outlook ,outlook express and eudora i believe ,and in
case of outlook express only outgoing mail.AVG6 email scanner is a waste
of space as it scans the inbox.dbx folder anyway on your pc,i.e afater
you have recvieved the mail) and not by using proxy server as is the case
with avast (also free) or AVG7 (payware).Having said that the resident
shield detect any viruses anyway.

Next time I email you, I'll sig my message with a Belarc report, so I
can see what hardware and software I'm using. :)

I'd say it's the former.

Hi Peter,
I had the same problem. I'm using AVG Free version and Eudora 5.1. When
I first ran it I saw no certification on messages I sent or received.
THere is a program on the AVG site to work for other programs than
Eudora etc.
Cant't remember what it is called - something like "universal Email
scanner". Anyway I downloaded it and ran it. After that I got the
certifications in outgoing & incoming email.

Hope this helps
Glenn.

Change the default AVG sig line here:

AVG control center --> Email Settings --> Advanced settings -->
Certification.

Advertise yourself instead! Or just plain erase the dang thang :)

Right click the AVG Systray Icon select 'email scanner' in the control
centre and 'Advanced settings'. Once the required advanced settings
are selected, the scanner should work. Main program dialogue should
display this on the left side. Sending an email to yourself should
display one or both of the following on the bottom of the email.

Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free.
Checked by AVG anti-virus system (http://www.grisoft.com).
Version: 6.0.520 / Virus Database: 318 - Release Date: 18/09/03

Incoming mail is certified Virus Free.
Checked by AVG anti-virus system (http://www.grisoft.com).
Version: 6.0.520 / Virus Database: 318 - Release Date: 18/09/03

Avg should normally run at start-up and an icon be installed in the
systray.
If the program does not work as above with Eudora. it is either not
installed correctly or is in conflict with another program.

<top posting uncorrected>

Use Avast! It will tell you in the headers if it is working or not.
Auto-updates of def files and prog files on the fly.
