I use AVG as a secondary antivirus program and scan with it manually once a
week. Can someone please tell me how to get it to stop automatically
loading the update mgr. I see it in Task Manager but not in msconfig. I
dont want any part of it running unless I open it and I did not even install
email scanner.

Thanks.

I have 7.03 (which reads 7.3 on the Grisoft website and this thing sucks.
It's a fine scanner but has a mind of its own. the email scanner works,
then doesn't then won't allow you to turn it off, it won't load on boot.

It's history.

After AVG switched to the new version I had nothing but trouble with it and
dumped it.
It caused all sorts of strange behaviour in my computer.

I'm now using Avast Free Home Edition and love it!

You can switch on and off updates between auto, ask, and manual.
You have 60 days to register it but its worth it.

So far the only problem I've had with the new AVG, once I
installed it without the e-mail scanner which is crap, is the last
attempt at an update, when it told me that the program was
corrupted. I had to reinstall. Don't know what that was all about.

right click icon in task bar. Click launch AVG control center. Select Schedule,
then at bottom, open scheduled tasks. Edit 'update schedule plan'. Either
delete it or un-select the periodically update box :o)

Very easy.

Like what? I am having programs trying to hit my "A" drive all of a sudden
for no reason and Total Uninstall wants my D: drive on Browse for a file to
install.

And other stuff.

It craps out. Mine decided not to come on at boot even though services were
turned on.

Trouble is, we can't go back to version 6. Grisoft isn't going to
keep writing definitions for 6 much longer, if they haven't
stopped already. Don't know what I'll do if AVG 7 is no good -- I
don't like any other free antivirus. I used to like InnoculateIT,
while it was free, but that's gone. AntiVir has a really clunky
interface and is slow as muck. Free F-Prot won't work on NTFS file
system drives, because it's DOS based. I found Avast! intrusive.
What's a cheap person to do? Not that cost is the only
consideration. You couldn't pay me to put Norton or McAfee on my
computer.

They haven't, virus-updates for AVG 6 6 are still available, fingers
crossed.

Agreed about the interface, but slow ? It's by far less resource hungry
than AVG, and a full system scan takes about the same time as a scan with
AVG 6.

If you do have problems with AVG then you can still get a
free one year licence of CA's EZ Armor and just install Etrust antivirus
(InnoculateIT's replacement) - I prefered AVG7 to etrust,
but AVG7 didn't get on with some programs.

disposable email address)

I hear ya and raise ya 10 on Norton and McAfee - geezus, both of those
were so intrusive, and so bulky, and so resource hungry, and so difficult
even when it comes time to uninstall, with all the orphans and auxilaries
they leave lying around...

You know, on AVG Free, the v7 flavor, what has worked really good for me
when it glitches (and that's not really very often for me, and then when
it does, it seems it's only on 1 of 3 boxes where I use it) is just
download the latest version, completely uninstall the old one, reboot,
and then install the new one.

Sometimes I might still have a problem with update at that point, so I
have just re-discovered the update from hard-drive method [from "Fred" in
24hoursupport.helpdesk - leave it to an Englishman to pull my butte out
of the fire again, ehh? (^;] so, I also download the latest update BIN
file [and when Grisoft servers are rebelling, I right-click, "Save Target
As" which seems to work better] and then use Fred's kind hint reminding
me of the procedure:

1) In Control centre - Update Manager - double-click
"Automatic AVG Free ......etc"

2) go to - Properties - untick "Do not ask for Update Source" - then
"Check for Update"

3) double click "Folder" and select directory where
you stored the bin file.

I too still miss IPE - that was really a neat little dealy-o with quite a
large community supporting it, including in here, but I also remember in
their last days how many false positives and update problems there were
with that, and CA's IMHO rather arrogant replies to notice of the
problems which amounted to calling us freeware users "beggars can't be
choosers" or to that effect or else I probably would have gone to their
$ware version in support of all the years of using their freeware. It's
still essentially the same interface as the old IPE, with some polish
[like in the 'shoe' not the 'country'] and really not that expensive.

But, I'm a cheep basket too, and slam proud of it, so as long as I can
bump AVG around, I'll keep using it! I dunno, I kind of like it,
especially when it's working right - it's mostly just the lack of control
over update and test options which I'm trying to adjust to, along with
everybody else, I guess.

I just hope the folks in here keep up with their tweaks and fixes too!

Thanks to all!

Bart

Been there, ain't going back. I picked AVAST. Intrusive is the best of
options for me.

I don't know whether I should correct you, but this time it's a German
pulling your a*** out of the fire. ( Mind you I suffered the same
updating
problem as you've experienced a couple of days ago and spent time
playing around with AVG until I found the answer - and am glad to share
all I know with anyone and that is very , very little!)

( By the way I've been using AVG for a long time now and am not!
tempted by alternatives just yet - AVG has served me well)

BTW, I read that Win98/SE support has been extended...again....but that MS will not
publicize it on their site...or the updates...... I think it goes on for another
year...maybe
July 2006? I've forgotten exactly, but it's been extended. If I can recall where I
read
it I will send the link if anyone is interested.

FWIW I have ver 7 and it works just fine with XP!
I did notice that MS lists it among their many AV partners....
and from their site it's a quick dl...and no install, get PW, etc.
Perhaps it's different for those who don't already have or have
never used AVG? Anyway, it's click, fast dl and it's ready to run!
I've used it for years without any problems...but it wasn't
on this machine BEFORE dl'ing ver 7.0. 1.52 KB .
So it looks like it's just dl, install without the prior procedures
being required.

That's odd - I have been using it for several weeks now on my Windows
2000 without a peep of trouble with it. Scans Eudora email (incoming
and outgoing) with no sweat, runs nightly scans with no sweat, etc.
Virtually indistinguishable from the previous Version 6 as far as
performance goes.

Sounds like you have either a corrupted install or a conflict with
some other program...

Same experience here, also on Win2K. Running it with The Bat email
client, nightly scans, haven't had any difficulties.

Certainly possible although I went trhough 3 de/installs. I was fine until
I topped off with 7.03 from 7.02x
