Running Win98 SE. Installed version 7 and all I got was a icon on the
desktop. I was expecting a menu under programs. Is a desktop icon all
we get?

The menu item "AVG Free Edition" was created during my installation. It
contains icons for "AVG Free Control Centre", "AVG Free Edition for
Windows", "AVG Free Virus Vault", and "Uninstall AVG Free Edition for
Windows". I am using Windows XP SP2.

That fixed it, thanks a lot. BTW, I didn't use the email scanner on v6 and
don't intend to for this one. Would not installing the email scanner during
the advanced installation enable me to have my "colored" system tray icon?
Glad it worked....

I don't know the answer to the icon question, as I simply activated the
scanner and it seems to work fine with no delays.
The only small nuisance for me, is the extra copy in the e-mail text
showing the name of the program and that it was checked. Very minor
trade off for a free program that for me, has never missed.

I uninstalled avg6 before install avg7, it generated a registration
number for me, is its wisdom ?

I'm really confused. Is this registration number is given at
installation for other people? Do I still need to go ask for a
registration number?

AVG 7 automatically uninstalls AVG6 and updates the data to
AVG7. During the process, it will display the new AVG7
registration number for you to record. As you continue, it
will automatically register the new version when it d/l's
it's new virus definitions.

You can turn off the certification. Configure Email scanner plugin.

Thank you. This make me clear.

Does AVG 6 have to be uninstalled prior
to installing AVG 7?

Just above the download link, it says this:

"Please note that any previous version of AVG Free will be un-installed
automatically during the installation of the new AVG Free."

AVG Free v7 installed zip zip zip click click click ... no problems, on a
Dell 4600, Windows XP SP1, on top of previous AVG Free v6.

does anyone one else think that the new AVG Free *looks* awful? I appreciate
that what matters most with an anti-virus prog is that it finds and deals
with viruses, but the graphical interface on this one looks so clunky and
amateurish compared to the previous version. A minor gripe that won't stop
me using a great free program (I just like to moan sometimes ;)

My thoughts exactly - looks very clunky - but works OK - still a great free
program that has never let me down.

I would have to agree, but.... I installed it yesterday morning, and it's
set to scan and update 8 - 9 am, so this morning the only way I knew it had
kicked in was the icon in the tray. So I didn't have to look at it's ugly
face while it scanned. Bonus!

I haven't installed it yet, by the images in the User Guide seem to
show it looks okay. This is the kind of interface you get now since
XP came out - something that looks good to five-year-olds - in other
words, management types...

I like that the Virus Vault and whatnot are right on the interface
instead of buried in menus.

I've been running XP for most of this past year, so I'm quite used to the
"new look" a lot of programs have adopted. But believe me, the new AVG
interface is pretty abysmal by any standards!

Amazing....

We are given a totally free program, that for me as well as the numerous
other friends I insist use it, has worked flawlessly since inception,
and people are complaining about its looks.

To me, very strange.

A lot of negative comments on the AVG forum about being unable to update
signatures with the free version. When you try, you usually get a "Faulty
Internet Connection" message. The response seems to be that the server has
a limited capacity with large demands being made on it, and that the Pro
version doesn't have the problem.

I've just installed AVG for the first time tonight, so have some exploring
to do. This isn't a great beginning.

No problems at all updating reference files since I installed it a few
days ago.
