Automatic Updates problem

I am not sure that Jack ever installed the Active X Controls.

The question arises how can you tell whether they are installed?

This DCOM Error Report is mentioned a number of times in
Google with virtually no reported good outcomes, so whether
it was my suggestion or yours matters little, except that one or the
other is most likely the solution. That's speeds things up with the
next one.

Internet Properties > Programs > Manage Add-ons

This should tell if the Actice X Control are installed. But this only
applies to SP2 since Manage Add-ons was implemeted with Service Pack 2.

You could go to this folder as well

%windir%\Downloaded Program Files

OK, I got it all, I downloaded the Activex Control, and downloaded all
updates.
Thanks a lot for your help.

What method did you use to achieve this. Your feedback would be most
helpful.

Is it the one described as Windows Genuine Advantage
as otherwise it not immediately obvious?

You also need to select from the Drop down menu after
selecting Manage Add-ons.
Add ons that have been used by Internet Explorer

No, this one is for validating Windows. It is suppose to stop pirates from
downloading programs Microsoft Anti-spyware from the Download Center.

There are two Active X Controls listed in the Manage Adds-On for updates.

1. Windows Updates Active X Controls is called "WUWebClass Control". The dll
file to run the Acttive X control is located in the System32 directory and
called wuweb.dll.
2. Microsoft Updates is called "MUWebClass Control". The dll file is located
in the System32 directory and called muweb.dll

Also SFC will cache these dll files to the dllcache folder. So if they are
deleted, the Windows File Protection will automatically replace the files
with copys from the dllcache folder located in the System32 after checking
the security catalogs for file corruption. The security catalogs are located
here, but I do not see a security catalog for Microsoft Updates here but in
the cab file there is one present.

%windir%\system32\CatRoot\{F750E6C3-38EE-11D1-85E5-00C04FC295EE

You can obtain the cab files here the Microsoft Update Active X Controls
here:

http://update.microsoft.com/microsoftupdate/v6/V5Controls/en/x86/client/muweb_site.cab?1121269785890

If any of these files are deleted, then the Windows File Protection will not
function properly. Also if the Catalog folder has a limit of 150 .cat files.
If the you have the reached the limit then you will have problems updating
Windows. Updates will generally fail to install. Hence, the need for Rollups
and Service Packs.

Neither appear in Manage Add-ons. wuweb.dll is in the system32
directory but no sign of muweb.dll.

Automatic update is not enabled only the reminder prompt. All
downloads made using Custom option with absolutely no problems.
I also download Office updates when they are available.

Starnge, have you tried both drop down choices in the Manage Add-ons. When I
choose "Add-ons that have been used by IE". They show on all my systems.
When I choose "Add-ons currently loaded....", they do not show up untill I
load the Windows Update page and without exiting that page..
Automatic update is not enabled only the reminder prompt. All
downloads made using Custom option with absolutely no problems.
I also download Office updates when they are available.

Do you have the "Office Update Installation Engine" listed in the Add-ons
which uses the opuc.dll file for Office Updates?
