Yep, and that's because I've seen Gonzo lieing out of his arse saying
even the R8500 had better drivers than Nvidia's. I owned an R8500 and
also GF2/3/4 so know that statement is BS and Gonzo is not to be
trusted due to his biased opinions. Right now I own a GF4 and 9800pro,
I think that qualifies me to be objective. And it' not for me to prove
anything. It is for me to make an informed decision about the CAT 3.8
drivers though. You do as you see fit. Just don't BS me with this is
some sort of Nvida conspiracy, I don't buy it.

I know Gonzo from way back and he will buy any video card so
long as it is not a Nvidia video card.

I kind of share that viewpoint in that I think the company is slime -
but that's not a new opinion for me based on the current doings. It's
based on their history of nastiness and some insider stuff on the
X-Box. I think of them as the Creative Labs of video - another
company I think is a waste of air.

Mind you, up until about a year or so ago I also despised ATI because
of their driver stupidity.

Still, it is possible for a video driver to trash a monitor. Way back in
the bad old OS/2 days, I had an S3-based video card mated with an IBM
6317 monitor. There was some problem with the drivers that caused it to
overdrive the monitor for brief periods during mode switches. Each time
it happened, some amount of damage (excessive wear/tear) would occur to
the circuitry. The eventual result was total failure of the monitor. I
went through 7 of them (thank goodness it was under warranty and IBM was
really great about replacing them). Eventually someone got suspicious
that 7 blown monitors by one customer wasn't just some cosmic
coincidence and that there must be some underlying problem causing it.
They dug in and discovered the driver problem.

Had the opposite problem once. A Dell 15 inch monitor that eats video
cards. Went through several as you described on different computers
before I figured it out. Presume a bad connection, but never solved it,
just quit using it. Still have that monitor if someone wants to give a
nasty present.
