ATi 650 combo tuner hotfix

I seen the Aver card online. This one was PCI-e. That would be awesome if
that was concurrent and get the greater bandwidth off the express bus.. I
have to check my mobo. I have a Dell XPX Gen 4. It works for me what I
want. Thanks for the input.

JW said:
I have seen one report of a Vista user with 2 Hauppauge 1600s and he claimed
that he was able to concurrently record 2 NTSC programs and 2 OTA HD
programs and watch a previously recorded program at the same time. The 1600
apparently has separate drivers for each tuner which the 650 as you have
found has not. AverMedia has now also come out with a dual tuner card that
it claims can currently support both tuners concurrently.
JeffS said:
Yes indeed. Im wondering if this is a limitation of having only one
encoder?
You may have two tuners but a single encoder will only result in the
problem
were having now. Beats me. I was checking out the Haupaughe 1600. I
will
seek out peoples results here. If you see anything let me know. Thanks
much.

JW said:
I totally understand why your position I was just stating what I think
the
design deficenciy is in MC that does not provide for using one tuner and
saying another is not available at the same time when you try and use it.
Your very right since only one tuner can be seen at a time...But that
doesnt
mean both tuners can be programmed. With Beyond TV it work the way i
described above without a hitch. Short of concurrent tuner use. MS
can
download a trial copy and test it for themselfs hahaha. I can from
channel 2
to 1361 and no problems. So....if little Beyond TV can do it, then
Huge
MS
can too. Sarcasm not for you :)

:

I think with MC recognizing both tuners is that MC always assumes that
any
tuner is has set up is available and in the case of 650 that will not
always
be true.
Ok, my latest update. I submitted a trouble ticket with ATI
concerning
the
TV Wonder 650 card and its concurrent functionality of using the DVR
and
watching TV. This is their response.

"This product is not capable of working with TWO inputs at a time.
Only
one
at a time. Therefore, it is not possible to watch one show while
using
the
DVR function on another channel."
Ticket: 73#-1##84##

So, Microsoft needs to work on the setup procedure and guide
function
for
this situation. They need to setup an ATSC tuner first, then the
NTSC
tuner
second, then Get the Guide data. In doing so that step needs to
allow
first
the signal test to be done. This will establish what ATSC digital
channels
you want in the guide based on signal strength. Then the next step
should
obtain guide data for the NTSC tuner based on you input type (Set
top
digital
box, standard cable without a box, etc). When the guide is used it
should
select the appropriate tuner for the channel selected. This will
resolve
the
issue with VMC and dual tuner single input use cards. If it works
for
Beyond
TV they can make it work for VMC.

Now. If the DVR function while watching TV is important to you, as
it
is
to
me, don't spend your money on this card. If this is not an issue
then
you
cant go wrong for its supperior TV quality.

This ends this issue for me. I hope it helps you all make
decisions.
And
I
hope MS does look at this and do something. If they adopt this
setup
it
WILL
resolve setup for all types of cards. Case closed.

:

Thank you for your response. I suspected that what you reported
was
true.
I have seen several reports from user of the Hauppauge 1600 tuner
card
that
they do not have the same problem which means that the Hauppauge
1600
drivers make their card look like 2 differnent cards so that both
tuners
can
be used concurrently.
Well, to answer that....with this card (ATI TV Wonder 650) you
can't
concurrently watch and record. I was checking out device manager
an
see
there is only one ATI Streaming device, which leads me to believe
the
card
maybe a dual tuner, but the hardware encoder/decoder may only
handle
one
stream at a time. So, unless ATI can resolve that issue, AND
concurrent
use
is important, as it is to me, I would hold off on this card. Its
picture
quality is awesome, but Im disapointed. I would like to record
Heroes
and
watch another show. Quality wise....believe it or not....Media
Center
does a
great job in recording. Im impressed with Beyond TV's ability to
seamlessly
put both ATSC & NTSC guides together. Switching between the two
tuners
is
flawless. Time for me to get another card. I want a dual tuner
card
with
concurrent capabilities.

:

Can you use both tuners concurrently with beyond TV watch with
one
tuner
and
record with the other or recored from both concurrently?

I just wanted to add that BeyondTV works with setting up both
ATSC
&
NTSC
tuners. I believe its the setup routine and guide setup that
is
preventing
MC to work correctly. When I setup BeyondTV I select the
Cable
(Analog)
tuner first, then I entered the zip code, then I selected the
Antenna
(Digital) tuner. BeyondTV started and then downloaded the
Guide.
I
was
able
to use both tuners and the guide functioned correctly with
both
ATSC
&
NTSC
channels. MS needs to check this out. It's not my hardware
or
drivers.
It
their setup process and Guide function setup implementation.
Personally,
I
would rather use MC....but if its not resolved I will pay for
BeyondTV
and
disable the MC Services to save resources. Thanks.

going
to
the

I don't understand why MS would stop working on this issue. Under windows XP
Media center the ATI 650 pro card would place the DTV channels at the end of
the regular channels. i.e. add 1000 to the channel number. That way it would
appear as a single tuner to the media center system but would allow viewing
of both signals.

This feature was lost in the migration to VISTA. The hot fix does not
address this.

In XP-Media Center the DTV setup would come up after the analog setup was
complete and ask where you wanted to start adding DTV channels.

This method should also be used when direct connecting a cable tuner box and
having analog cable connected.

Is MS still working on solving their compatibility issue with the ATI650 pro
card?
