Indirectly, you have had exposure to Lexmark. Dell printers are
produced and designed by Lexmark. In fact, they are Lexmark printers
with a slight change to make them not accept Lexmark brand cartridges.

Dell wanted more profits from the ink cartridges they sold, and knew
people would not buy the ink cartridges for them by mail-order unless
they were forced to. They asked the manufacturers of inkjet printers to
either give them a chunk of the ink market profits for all the printers
they got out their with their bundled computers, or to make a printer
that required "Dell" cartridges. HP and Epson were not interested in
either offer, so Dell dropped them, but Lexmark offered to make the
printers they asked for.

I'm pretty sure the ink cartridges you get that say Dell on them are
manufactured by Lexmark, just like the printers.

Hi Brendan,

That's a good tip! Before I bought my new printer, I used a Lexmark
Z32. I noticed the paper soaking and started using 24lb paper, which
held the ink much better than 20lb. I wish I had known that back then
:-D Oh well, live and learn :-) Thanks for posting that.

Best,
Christine

This isn't fully accurate.

Most toner cartridges (both black and color) for laser printers are
indeed low yield. And in the inkjet biz, a number of manufacturers did
supply smaller or low yield cartridges until a few law suits developed.

In some cases, there are (now) two cartridges offered everyone, a low
yield and higher yield version. The low yield, which often comes with
the printer to start with, usually offers very poor economy, where
something around spending 20% more will give you double the printing
capacity.

Guess I'm just lucky. My HP has two color
cartridge sizes--one with 19ml and the other with
38 ml of ink. The normal prices is $26 for the
small and $50 for the larger--essentially the same
price per ml when you figure variations in store
prices. And, the printer came with the larger size.

I hear lots of stuff that contradicts my personal
experience. If I some experience, even though a
little thin, I will continue to be skeptical of
most statements that generally whine that the
person is being screwed by big business, the other
political party, the rich, etc.
